SECTION A (40 MARKS)

There are TWO (2) questions in this section. Answer ALL questions.

1. Joseph was planning to make a loan from a Bank with the amount of RM 100,000 in order
to purchase a printing machine at his shop. Calculate the accumulated amount of the loan
after 10 years as according to the following bank offers as in Table 1.

Compare the value, and identify which bank would give the best offer? (30 Marks)

2. A department store manager determines that a new billing system will be cost-effective
only if the mean monthly account is more than RM 170. A random sample of 400 monthly
accounts is drawn, for which the sample mean is RM 178. The accounts are approximately
normally distributed with a standard deviation of RM 65. Using significance level of 0.01,
conclude whether the new system will be cost-effective.

a) State the null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis. (2 Marks)

b) Sketch the rejection region at ∝= 0.01. (3 Marks)

c) From the hypothesis in (a), test the store manager’s assumption using ∝= 0.01 level
of significance. (5 Marks)

There are TWO (2) questions in this section. Answer ALL questions.

1. Table 2 shows the data set represent the ages of the Presidents in a country when they
were first inaugurated.

a) Construct a frequency distribution for the selected data set by using Sturge’s rule formula,
𝑘 = 1 + 3.3 log 𝑛. (10 Marks)

b) Calculate the relative frequencies for each class.

(5 Marks)

c) Construct a frequency histogram and frequency polygon for the data.

(5 Marks)

d) Using the result from part (a), compute the mean and median.
(6 Marks)

e) Using the result from part (d), find the skewness of the data and determine the shape of
the distribution. (2 Marks)

f) Using the result from part (a), compute the standard deviation. (5 Marks)

2. The manager of MRM System randomly selected 10 sales representatives and

determined the number of sales calls each one made last month and the number of units
of the product he or she sold last month. The sample information is reported in Table 3.

a) Draw the scatter diagram from the above table. Explain the nature of correlation.

b) Calculate the correlation coefficient by using Pearson’s Product Moment method. Interpret
your findings. (10 Marks)

c) Find the regression equation 𝑌 = 𝑎 + 𝑏𝑥. (10 Marks)

d) Interpret the slope, 𝑏. (2 Marks)
