A plasticizer is a substance that is added to a material to make it softer and more flexible, to
increase its plasticity, to decrease its viscosity, or to decrease friction during its handling in
manufacture.
Plasticizers are commonly added to polymers such as plastics and rubber, either to facilitate
the handling of the raw material during fabrication, or to meet the demands of the end
product's application. For example, plasticizers are commonly added to polyvinyl chloride
(PVC), which otherwise is hard and brittle, to make it soft and pliable; which makes it suitable
for products such as clo… (more)

A plasticizer is a chemical additive that is added to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to improve its
flexibility, durability, and workability. PVC is naturally a rigid material, and the addition of
plasticizers helps to make it softer and more flexible, making it suitable for a wider range of
applications.
Plasticizers work by reducing the intermolecular forces between the polymer chains in PVC,
which allows the chains to move more freely and makes the material more flexible. There are
many different types of plasticizers that can be used in PVC formulations, including phthalate
esters, adipates, trimellitates, and epoxies, among others.
The choice of plasticizer will depend on the specific application and performance
requirements of the PVC. For example, phthalate esters are commonly used as plasticizers in
flexible PVC applications, such as wire and cable insulation, while trimellitates may be used in
more demanding applications that require higher temperature resistance and durability.
While plasticizers can improve the flexibility and workability of PVC, they can also have some
drawbacks. Some plasticizers, such as certain phthalate esters, have been associated with
health and environmental concerns, and alternative plasticizers, such as bio-based or non-
phthalate plasticizers, may be used in some applications to address these concerns.

NMR should also allow you to indentify the plasticizer.
If you dont have an NMR you can try though Raman spectroscopy to indentify but it might be

Related What are the commonly used plasticizers for soft PVC?
Because pure PVC is brittle in nature a plasticiser is required to increase its plasticity (soft
mouldable). Most commonly used plasticizers are phthalates.Phthalates based plasticizer
include dioctyl phthalates (dop),dibutyl phthalates(dbp),dioctyl tetra phthalates
(dinp),dioctyl maleate(dom),trioctyl tritrimellitate(totm).
There are many non phthalates plasticizers used to make pvc a maelleble material such as
eposidixed soya bean oiladepate compounds such as bis(2 ethylhexyl )adipate are also
used.acetyl tributyl citrate is one of the most used component to increase the flexibility of
PVC.

1. PVC products: One of the most common uses of plasticizers is in the production of
polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products. PVC is naturally a rigid material, and plasticizers
are added to make it more flexible and easier to work with. PVC products that may
contain plasticizers include cables, flooring, window frames, and medical tubing.
