II. Concept Notes

“Peace and Harmony, this is the real wealth of a family.” – Anonymous.
No one is born into this world alone; each one has shared a bond and a good relationship
with their families, at least at birth; and mostly for everyone, that family bond will follow them
throughout life. For many people, it is the most important bond of all.
In the Philippine context, Filipino families have been a good embodiment of close family ties.
The closeness and ties are extended not just to the immediate family members, but also to the next
of kin. Filipino values— which serve as a guide in becoming better citizens that will contribute to
making the world the finest place to live in— are passed on from past generations to the present.
This self-learning module highlights the universal human values that remain intact throughout
the years. This will guide you as you journey through life and will help you realize that no matter
what your roots are or how different you may be from others, you continue to live by the values to
live harmoniously and peacefully with others.

Review: What is a Play?

Death of a Salesman, which was written by Arthur Miller, is a kind of play. A play is a work
of drama, usually consisting mostly of dialogue between characters and intended for theatrical
performance rather than just reading. The writer of a play is called a playwright.

To be more familiar with play/theater, you will be introduced to different technical

vocabularies for drama/ theater. Some of these terms are:

a. AUDITORIUM. The part of the theatre accommodating the audience during the
performance. Sometimes known as the "house.”

b. BACKSTAGE. The part of the stage and theatre which is out of the sight of the
audience. The service areas of the theatre, behind, beside, or underneath the stage.
Also refers to the personnel who work in the technical departments that work to create
the performance, alongside the actors and musicians.

c. BEGINNERS. A call given by Stage Management to bring those actors who appear in
the first part of a play to the stage. e.g., "Act One Beginners to the stage, please". The
actors/actresses are then called by name.

d. CAST. The members of the acting company. The Cast List contains the names of the
actors and the characters they will be playing.

e. BLACKOUT. (1) Complete absence of stage lighting. Blue working lights backstage
should remain on and are not usually under the control of the board, except during a
Dead Blackout (DBO), when there is no onstage light. Exit signs and other emergency
lightings must always remain on. (2) The act of turning off (or fading out) stage lighting
(e.g., "This is where we go to blackout")

f. CASTING. The process of the director choosing actors to perform the characters in the
play.

g. CLEARANCE. Message passed to Stage Management from the Front of House

Manager that the house is ready for the performance to begin. (ie everyone is in their
correct seat and there are no coach parties coming through the doors). Announced as
'We have Front of House Clearance'.

4
h. CURTAIN CALL. At the end of a performance, the acknowledgement of applause by
actors - the bows.

i. TECHNICAL REHEARSAL. (also known as the TECH RUN, or just TECH). Usually, the
first time the show is rehearsed in the venue, with lighting, scenery, and sound.
Costumes are sometimes used where they may cause technical problems (e.g., Quick
changes). Often a very lengthy process. Often abbreviated to the Tech.

j. GREEN ROOM. Room that is close to the stage (i.e., the green) for the actors to meet
and relax before or after going on stage.

k. CYCLORAMA. Usually shortened to just cyc (pronounced sike). The Cyclorama is a

curved plain cloth or plastered wall filling the rear of the stage or TV studio. Often used
as a sky backing to a traditional set, or as the main backing for a dance piece etc. The
term is often loosely applied to a blue sky cloth.

l. PRESHOW. The period before the performance begins, when the audience may be in
the front-of-house areas, or even in the auditorium.

m. BLACKS. Black clothing worn by stage management during productions.

n. CALLBACKS. Following an audition, the director may ask to see a shortlist of actors
again - they are called back for an additional audition to enable the director to make
her/his decision.

o. A DRY TECH is without actors to rehearse the integration of lighting, scenic changes
etc. It follows that a WET TECH is a full technical rehearsal with actors and all technical
elements, although this term isn't used as often as DRY TECH.

p. PAPER TECH. A session without the set or actors when the technical and design team
talk through the show ensuring everything's going to work as planned. Stage Managers
can use this session to ensure all is written correctly in the Prompt Book.

CONTEXT CLUES

Have you ever come across some words unknown to you while you were reading? If you
have, then you are not alone. English language has different varieties; the fact that language is
dynamic and develops constantly, a lot of words come into existence— which, of course are not
known to all.

But did you know that there are ways to understand the meaning of some unfamiliar
vocabularies? If you happen to read a sentence and not seem to get its meaning, you just have
to look for clues!

Types of Context Clues:

1. Example Clues: Specific examples sometimes provide readers with clues about the
unknown word. Cued by the phrases “such as,” “including,” “consists of,” “like,” and “for
example.”

5
Ex: During a tornado, be aware of potential hazards, such as broken glass and sharp
objects.

2. Synonym or Definition Clues: A synonym or definition of the word may be used in the
sentence to help readers understand unfamiliar words.

Ex: If you are in a tall building during a tornado, locate the nearest enclosure, or room, to
seek shelter.

3. Antonym or Contrast Clues: On the other hand, antonyms or contrasts are sometimes
provided to give readers helpful clues.

Ex: Sometimes tornadoes develop so rapidly that there is no time to send a warning. Other
times, tornadoes develop gradually and there is more time to provide advance warning.

Learning Task 3- Reading Time!

Read the article provided for you here. Find out what the article is all about.

What should make up a strong family that possesses good family values? It is the family that
sustains its members, that supports and nourishes each other throughout the span of that family. A
strong family unit has to create a safe, positive, and supportive place for all members to thrive. They
are able to utilize resources and to live together in a fairly healthy manner.

The adults in a strong family set the tone. They are good role models that lead by
example. They reach out to friends and community and teach their children the importance of doing
the same – and that becomes part of who the children are. They work together to solve problems,
and they pass their skills on to the next generation. Some important elements of a strong family
system are family cohesion, family flexibility, and family communication.

Cohesion- In families, cohesion would be defined as the feeling of being loved, of

Belonging to the group and being nurtured by it. Although closeness is good in a family unit, there
must be a balance between being together and being separate. A person must be able to develop
their individuality, while being supported and confident within the family. A few things that bring a
family together are the commitment of other family members, and the spending of time together.

Flexibility- There must be a structure in a family, or it will become chaotic and will not
be a peaceful setting for a family. Conversely, there must be flexibility, or the family becomes rigid
and the authority figures are resented. We could compare a successful family to a democracy. There
are leaders, but the whole group is involved in the decision-making process. Although the leaders
are in charge all members develop the ability to cope with stress, and at times lead. While the family
works to avoid stressful situations they work together to solve problems, without blaming, criticizing,
and finding fault with each other. Families that tend to have a strong spiritual base seem to have a
sense of well-being that facilitates this working together in times of stress.

Communication- Ever hear the saying, “What we have here is a failure to

communicate?” A lack of communication can rip a family apart and destroy them. Things that
facilitate communication are the things mentioned so far— family closeness, flexibility, time spent
together, spirituality. All members must feel a freedom within the group to express themselves freely.

Another very important factor is the relationship between the “head” couple. In a family that
is parented by a happily married couple, people are able to express themselves more freely. What
they might say isn’t filtered through the problems of the “guardians.” A happy marriage seems to set
the tone in the house. It spills over from the family to the community and a healthy family will be
reaching out to help others. They do not tend to isolate themselves from the rest of the world.

A very important thing for families to teach their children is how to make good
decisions. If they have watched their parents making well thought out decisions over the years, they
will tend to be good decision makers themselves.

A healthy, happy family benefits our whole society. Among the children of strong
families there is less crime, less divorce and less emotional problems. They tend to go on and have
strong, healthy families of their own, having learned from their folk’s example.
