Cannabis Aphids
The cannabis aphid was not considered a significant pest of cannabis until the 21st century when
the legalization of cannabis in many parts of the world led to an increase in commercial
cultivation. Cannabis growers began to notice the damaging effects of cannabis aphids on their
crops.
Originated in 1748 in central Asia was first described by Carl Linnaeus
1960: First identified by an Italian researcher as a very new pest in North America

By end of 2017: Pests became pervasive, issued a pest warning advisory
OMAFRA issued an alert in the province. The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural
Affairs (OMAFRA) issued an alert to cannabis growers in the province, warning them of the
potential threat posed by the pest.
Since its detection in Ontario, the cannabis aphid has spread to other parts of Canada and the
United States. It has also been reported in Europe and Asia. The spread of the cannabis aphid
has been facilitated by the global trade
