As One Who Has Slept
JOHN TAVENER
CHESTER MUSIC
This work was commissioned by Winchester Cathedral. It was first performed on
25th January 1997, by Winchester Cathedral Choir conducted by David Hill.
COMPOSER'S NOTE
As the great Orthodox liturgical texts ring out o n Great and Holy Saturday, the
Resurrection of Christ is already happening. Liturgical vestments change in front of
our eyes from black t o silver, and the Church waits with anticipation until midnight,
t o proclaim that "Christ is Risen'!
So, therefore, the mood of As one who has slept, taken from the great liturgy of
St Basil on Easter Saturday morning, is full of awe, silence and expectation. The
atmosphere is deeply solemn as w e stand before the greatest mystery o f our
salvation. Christ has descended into Hades, and "trampled down death b y death;
and t o those in the tomb He has given life'.'
Musical notes
The second choir provides a 'shadod, and should be placed at a distance from the
first choir.
Where repeated notes occur on the same syllable, the second should be gently
sounded to give the feeling of a pulse. The word Alleluia should be pronounced in
the Greek Orthodox manner:
A as in French 'la'
le 'lee'
IOU 'loo'
i 'ee'
a 'ya' with short 'a: as in French 'la'
