Toy Story, Finding Nemo,

Inside Out, and many more.

Here’s the formula Pixar used

to be one of most creative
companies in the world:

@albadawee
Pixar’s secret formula:

Technology + Creativity +
Talent = Magic

Let’s dive in → ↞ ↟

@albadawee
1. Technology:

In 1986, Steve Jobs acquired

the animation division of
Lucasfilm & gave it to Pixar.

This made Pixar the pioneer

in computer animation.

The result → the world’s first

computer-animated feature
film, Toy Story.

@albadawee
Lessons on technology

→ Invest in Technology that

compliments your skills to
create superpowers.

Example: If you’re good at

sketching, invest in an iPad to
take your skill digital.

@albadawee
2. Creativity I

FACT: All of Pixar’s ideas,

stories, and characters were
developed internally.

Idea → Storyboard → Movie

production (All at Pixar):

Every movie contains literally

tens of thousands of ideas.

@albadawee
2. Creativity II

Everyone is allowed to share

ideas.

Creative leaders find the

ideas that fit into a coherent
whole that makes the story.

Storyboards (a comic-book
version of the story) are
created & updated until ready
for production.

@albadawee
Lessons on Creativity:

→ Create a high-level
process for your creativity
& stick to it.

→ Socialize your idea,

take in feedback, and
iterate on it.

High-level

3. Talent I

Pixar believed in the dominance

of people over ideas:

If you give a good idea to a

mediocre team → they will
screw it up.

if you give a mediocre idea to a

great team → they will fix it or
create one that works.

@albadawee
3. Talent II

They created a community

where:

- It is safe, to tell the truth

- It’s always safe to offer ideas

- Managers can’t mandate,

they must earn trust

- A culture of receiving &

providing feedback in a
positive way is a custom.

@albadawee
Lessons on Talent:

→ Plant yourself in an
environment with people more
talented than you.

→ Learn the art of receiving

and giving feedback
objectively.

@albadawee
TLDR;

Pixar’s Magic =Technology +

Creativity + Talent

Lessons:

- Spend time with those more

talented than you

- Create a high-level process for

creativity

- Receive & give feedback

objectively

- Invest in technology on top of skills

- Socialize your ideas
