product. Ask the student to try and explain the word

without using any of the words on the paper or words
derived from them, e.g. produce. The rest of the class
should try to guess what word is being described.

such as: What I’m trying to say is …; In other words …;
3

This is a type of …; It can be used for … . Write these

phrases on the board so that students can refer to them
during the activity.
3 Organise the class into small groups. Hand out a set of
cards to each group, which they should place face down
on their desks. Students should take turns to pick up a
card and describe the word or phrase in capitals without
saying any of the words on the card. The other students
in the group should guess what the word or phrase is.
Encourage them to use some of the phrases on the board.
4 The activity continues until all the cards have been used
and all the words have been described. The student
who has guessed the most words in each group wins the
activity.

Adaptation and extension

As a follow-up activity, students draw as many of the terms
as they can in 30 seconds for their team to guess. This could
be done on the board as a whole-class activity or on a sheet
of paper as pairwork.
