Practical 5 - Pelvic Wall and Pelvic Cavity

Objective:

To explore the anatomical features of the pelvic wall, including the muscles, nerves, and blood supply,
and to understand the structures and functions of the pelvic cavity.

Introduction:

The pelvic region of the body plays a crucial role in supporting and protecting various organs involved in
reproduction, excretion, and locomotion. In this practical session, we will focus on the pelvic wall and
the structures within the pelvic cavity. By examining the muscles, nerves, and blood supply of the pelvic
wall, as well as studying the arrangement and functions of the pelvic organs, students will gain a
comprehensive understanding of this important anatomical region.

Procedure:

Pelvic Wall:

1. Begin by studying the bones of the pelvis, including the hip bones, sacrum, and coccyx. Observe their
shapes, articulations, and landmarks. Understand the differences between the male and female pelvis in
terms of size, shape, and pubic arch angle.

2. Identify and study the muscles of the pelvic wall, including the pelvic diaphragm, levator ani, and
coccygeus muscles. Discuss their attachments, functions, and roles in supporting the pelvic organs,
maintaining continence, and facilitating childbirth.

3. Examine the innervation of the pelvic wall. Identify the sacral plexus, which gives rise to nerves
supplying the pelvic region. Trace the courses and functions of the sciatic nerve, pudendal nerve, and
other branches of the sacral plexus. Discuss their sensory and motor functions in the pelvic area.
Pelvic Cavity:

1. Study the general arrangement of the pelvic viscera within the pelvic cavity. Identify and examine the
urinary bladder, ureters, rectum, and reproductive organs, including the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian
tubes in females, and the prostate gland and seminal vesicles in males. Discuss their positions,
relationships, and functions.

2. Explore the blood supply, nerve innervation, and lymphatic drainage of the pelvic organs. Understand
the clinical significance of these structures in diagnosing and treating pelvic pathologies.

3. Discuss the male and female genital organs in more detail. Study the anatomy and functions of the
male and female reproductive systems, including the external and internal genitalia. Discuss the role of
these organs in reproduction and sexual function.

Conclusion:

This practical session on the pelvic wall and pelvic cavity provides students with a comprehensive
understanding of the anatomical structures and functions in this region. By actively engaging in the
examination of the pelvic wall, exploring the nerves and blood supply, and studying the arrangement
and functions of the pelvic organs, students will develop a solid foundation in pelvic anatomy, which is
essential for clinical practice and further studies in the field of medicine.

Practical 5 - Pelvic Wall and Pelvic Cavity

Objective:

To explore the anatomical features of the pelvic wall, including the muscles, nerves, and blood supply,
and to understand the structures and functions of the pelvic cavity.

Introduction:

The pelvic region of the body plays a crucial role in supporting and protecting various organs involved in

the structures within the pelvic cavity. By examining the muscles, nerves, and blood supply of the pelvic
wall, as well as studying the arrangement and functions of the pelvic organs, students will gain a
comprehensive understanding of this important anatomical region.

1. What are the main bones of the pelvis and their anatomical features?

2. How does the male pelvis differ from the female pelvis in terms of size, shape, and pubic arch angle?

3. Which muscles constitute the pelvic wall, and what are their attachments and functions?

4. Discuss the innervation of the pelvic wall and its clinical significance.

Pelvic Cavity:

5. Describe the general arrangement of the pelvic viscera within the pelvic cavity.

6. Identify and examine the urinary bladder, ureters, rectum, and reproductive organs in both males and
females.
7. Explain the blood supply, nerve innervation, and lymphatic drainage of the pelvic organs.

8. Discuss the anatomy and functions of the male and female reproductive systems.

Conclusion:

This practical session on the pelvic wall and pelvic cavity provides students with an opportunity to
explore the anatomical structures and functions in this region. By answering these questions and
actively engaging in the examination of the pelvic wall, exploration of the nerves and blood supply, and
study of the arrangement and functions of the pelvic organs, students will develop a solid foundation in
pelvic anatomy, which is essential for clinical practice and further studies in the field of medicine.
