County First Team News.
The County 1st team gathered at Bedford and County for a bit of team bonding , lunch and a match vs the mens scratch team
ahead of next week’s county match days in Norfolk. Holly Reddick, ex tour pro and former Bedfordshire team player came
along with her daughter Rose (next generation Bedfordshire) for Q&A and nails! Many thanks to her for a fabulous insight
into the game, strategy , tactics and mindset. We also gave out the new county kit and as it was Sue’s birthday we had a cake
courtesy of Nicky Westgate and enjoyed a fabulous buffet by James Bolton , club caterer. The match was preceded by a
putting challenge set by Caitlin which Annabel, Sue and Jolie also took part in. 3 USA college scholars went off first in the
form of Fin Cummings, Caitlin Thomas and Jolie Wong, all hitting the ball prodigious distances. Fin came out ahead in both
matches but the girls pushed him hard! Next up a fourball with Sue Caley and Annabel individually taking on Elliot Smith
and Ross Hamilton. I believe the matches all went to the last green. My personal thanks to the men for giving the team some
tough opposition ahead of the county matches next week. Scratch golfers on their home course were always going to be a
challenge and just to add a bit of a test I made our team go off the yellow tees. The team is ready for Wensum Valley. Sue
helped finish the day by sharing the rest of the cake with the men who thoroughly enjoyed joining in the birthday celebration.

Wonderful weather was just what Debbie Newnham-Davies hoped for when planning
her Ladies Captain’s weekend. As usual Saturday would see a mixed event with 24
teams taking part – the event would also see the winners qualify for the new National
Ping Mixed competition. Scores were excellent with 3 pairs coming in with 43
points. Commiserations to Paula Foot and Robert Costello who were beaten on
countback but congratulations, and good luck in your next round, go to Pat Anderson
and Neil Hodgkins.
Ladies Captains' Day would see the weather forecast looking
set fair and indeed many umbrellas were raised for shade. Our
greenstaff team had set the course up brilliantly, with a few
devilish holes to challenge entrants’ putting strategy!! These,
with nearest the pins and nearest the line, provided challenges a
plenty. Entrants were welcomed everyone at a well-stocked
Half-Way House, offering delicious cakes, baked by some of
our lovely Ladies, as well as ice creams and drinks a
plenty. The theme - Re-use, Recycle, Re-Purpose was
embraced by everyone. We saw PJ’s re-purposed for golf, past
Captain's Day outfits re-cycled, wheelie shopping and sack
barrow golf trolleys, some amazing visors sporting crisp packet
flowers (could start a new fashion) and skorts made many
different materials including curtains, coffee bags, orange
recycling bags and compost sacks. Oh, and a recycled Parrot
costume. Why not?!
Winner of the Captains Challenge was Anne Coates - most
ingenious recycler for saving the planet while creating haute
couture golf wear with coffee pods. Look out for her at British
Fashion Week next year!
Golf prize winners on the day were Gill Westgate, Pauline
Hulance and Sarah Conroy.
After golf everyone enjoyed Pimms at the starters hut, with a
putting competition and a chipping competition raising £115
for the junior section. Overall the day made £450 for the Ladies
Captains' charity FACES. Both golfers and helpers enjoyed a
fabulous meal courtesy of James, Nicky and the team.
A warm and very breezy Sunday afternoon, would see 28 ladies
play for the prestigious Mollie Barcock Trophy. With Captain
Lloyd Wardall unable to do the honours and start the ladies his
Vice Captain David Toes kindly stepped in. He also produced
some very welcome elderflower cordial on arrival at the Terrace,
expertly handed out the cakes Lloyd had organised, and was then
on hand for the prize presentation. Paula Foot was runner up with
38 points, and also recipient of the Granny Cup, but the Mollie
Barcock Trophy went to Bev Law with 40 points.

Bedford and County Golf Club
Bedford & County introduced a 4-month Associate Scheme in
March this year for ladies new or returning to golf and were
delighted to hold our first ‘Women on Par’ event on Friday 2nd
June, three months into this initiative. Having received the
‘Women on Par’ pack from England Golf we delivered a 10-hole
short course blue tees Texas Scramble. It was a lot of fun, an ideal
format for ladies new to golf, and back in the clubhouse we all
enjoyed a well-deserved Gin and Tonic, kindly donated by the
Slingsby team, or a glass of Prosecco. What better way to round
the evening off.
Monday 26th June would see the last event in the Scheme for 2023
with another fun Texas scramble. There were prizes of course ….
and drinks. Everyone had a great evening and our winners were
Gina, Rosie and Tara - but actually everyone was a winner as it
was a great finale to a great scheme. Well done everyone.

Bedford & County welcomed 76 players to their ladies Summer

Open on a glorious hot day where the halfway ice cream was not
just a treat but a necessity! An eagle on the 8th hole was the
highlight of the day for one of our visitors while number 13
turned out to be very lucky for Joanne Hilliard from Cambridge
Country club as this number held a nice return visit to Bedford
& County for her and 3 others to enjoy in the future, with a bottle
of prosecco to greet them after the game. With lots of companies
visiting the club for the day with ladies clothing to purchase it
was a great day out for our guests. The winning team had a
fantastic 104 points – 20 points better than the par for the day!
Congratulations go to Susan Simpkins, Heather Knox, Carolyn
Lines from Aspley Guise and Liz Godfrey from South Beds. The
raffle on the day and the draw for the fourball raised £530 for
local charity - FACES (Family and Children’s Early Help
Services) Ladies Captain Debbie Newnham Davies’ chosen
charity for her year. Many thanks to all the helpers on the day.
It was noted by our visitors how many men were on hand to help
on the day – thanks boys.

News from Cainhoe Wood Golf Course

On Saturday 10th of June Cainhoe Wood Ladies Captain Lecy

Robinson held her Captains day in aid of Sports Connection
foundation, a wonderful charity located in Peterborough that
looks to inspire children and young people through sports.
There was a fantastic turn out and the weather was glorious. The
team were joined on the day by former world trick shot
champion Geoff Swain and BT sports pundit and ex
Arsenal/West Ham/England football player Nigel Winterburn.
The day began with a demonstration from Geoff Swain on the
Castle course’s first tee, which was an amazing display of
skill, and great fun. Players then completed 18 holes of golf, had
a barbecue and we held a raffle and auction. Thanks to all those
attended and to the wonderful Cainhoe Ladies commitee who
helped Lecy pull it all together. The day was a fantastic success
and won by a team of Cainhoe ladies. So far funds have reached
over £8000 and still rising for SCF kids! The funds raised will
enable the charity to complete the sporting wishes for terminally
ill children. Further info on the charity can be found on their
