 We will be teaching today from the bible.

 I’m using the Amplified version. Of course - you can

use the version that you prefer.

 The bible is the only real truth.

 It is the inspired word of God.

 Gods truth comes to us by revelation from the Holy

Spirit as we meditate on His word.

 There then followed the Mosaic Age.

 Moses, the Lawgiver, received the Ten

Commandments and mankind was presented
with the God’s Law.

 Our subject today is Grace.
 Let’s start with two simplified definitions which
describe Gods heart towards us.
 (i) Firstly - God is merciful.
 What is Mercy?
 Mercy is not giving us the punishment we deserve!
 (ii) Then - God is Gracious.
 What is Grace?
© Sprozzy talks Godstuff - 2020 7
 We are in receipt of Grace when God gives us
blessings that we did not deserve, could not
earn and are not required to pay back!

 We come under Grace at the time of

salvation when we accept the substitute
sacrifice of Jesus.

 This has been called unmerited favour.

 In summary:
 We deserved punishment for sin and for our rejection
of Jesus, who gave Himself in full payment for our
transgressions.
 We receive God’s mercy when He declines to give us
the punishment we deserve!
 We are in receipt of Grace when God gives us
blessings that we did not deserve, could not earn and
are not required to pay back!
 His grace is ongoing – for ever!

 Let us look for a moment at our pre salvation
condition and understand why we needed a
saviour.
 The bible teaches us that we have all sinned.
 Romans 3:22>23
 There is no distinction…..since all have sinned and
continually fall short of the glory of God.
 We all missed the mark.
 We try to be good, but we fail.

© Sprozzy talks Godstuff - 2020 10

 To be clear!

 If we are trying to keep the Mosaic Law or

obey the Ten Commandments or to live
perfect lives to make ourselves acceptable to
God - we would have to do it all the time,
without failing in one detail - in order to
qualify as righteous.

 That is impossible – so we all failed!

© Sprozzy talks Godstuff - 2020 11
 The purpose of the Ten Commandments was to make
man aware of his sin and to show that it is impossible
for man to be righteous on his own without God.

 Romans 3:20
 For no person will be justified (made righteous,
acquitted, and judged acceptable) in His sight by
observing the works prescribed by the Law.
 For [the real function of] the Law is to make men
recognize and be conscious of sin [not mere perception,
but an acquaintance with sin which works toward
repentance, faith, and holy character].
© Sprozzy talks Godstuff - 2020 12
 The purpose of the Ten Commandments was not
to be used as a measure by which we assess
whether we are acceptable to God.
 It states there in Romans that no man will be
judged acceptable by observing the Law.
 The real purpose of the Law was to help us to
understand what is sin in order that we can
repent of it and live by faith in the atoning
sacrifice of Jesus, and thereby develop Godly
character.

 Let us look what the Apostle John says . I believe that John is talking here
to a mix of non-believers and Christians. He is talking to those who do
NOT have the truth – because they do not understand the significance of
the substitute sacrifice of Jesus and they do not understand Grace.
 1 John 1:9
 If we freely admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful
and just (true to His own nature and promises) and will forgive our sins
[dismiss our lawlessness] and [continuously] cleanse us from all
unrighteousness [everything not in conformity to His will in
purpose, thought, and action].

 But we, the believers, did confess our sins, we asked Jesus to forgive us
and asked Him to come into our hearts and take His rightful place.

© Sprozzy talks Godstuff - 2020 14

 There was no price that we could pay that would clean up our mess, to make us
acceptable to God.
 God is Holy – we were not.
 It was impossible to come into His presence, as we were. We were in a world
without God.
 But under a new Covenant God the Father provided a way.

 Jesus said in John 14:6

 I am the [only] Way [to God] and the real Truth and the real Life; no one comes to
the Father but through Me.

 And in John 3:16 it says

 For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world, that He even gave His [One
and] only begotten Son, so that whoever believes and trusts in Him as Saviour
shall not perish, but have eternal life.

© Sprozzy talks Godstuff - 2020 15

 Now – For those of us who have made our response to
those truths.
 For those of us who have accepted that Jesus paid a
price that we cannot pay.
 - For those of us who have asked Jesus (our creator!) to
come into our hearts.
 - For those of us who can say Jesus is Lord.

 Then, we are no longer under the law of Moses – the

Mosaic law. John 1:17, Acts 13:39, Gal 2:16

 We are now under Grace, in a New Covenant.

 So now, let us look at the situation after we are saved
.
 Our sin debt has been cancelled.
 When we are IN CHRIST, we have forgiveness of ALL sins,
PAST, PRESENT and FUTURE. A clean slate.
 We were crucified with Christ.
 We were resurrected with Him.
 We are a new creation.
 We are Born Again, Spiritually alive.

© Sprozzy talks Godstuff - 2020 17

 Our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. He lives in us, permanently.
1 Corinthians 6:19
 It is no longer I who live but Christ lives in me.
Galatians 2:20
 As He is, so are we in this world.
1 John 4:17.
 We have the mind of Christ.
1 Corinthians 2:16
 We are a new man (or woman).
Colossians 2:13
 Our old man is dead and gone.
Colossians 2:11

© Sprozzy talks Godstuff - 2020 18

 We have a new nature. Our old sin nature has gone – it is dead
and buried.
 Galatians 5:24
 And those who belong to Christ Jesus (the Messiah) have crucified
the flesh (the godless human nature) with its passions and appetites
and desires.

 Unfortunately, this is where many people begin to struggle,

because they have been wrongly taught!
 Sadly today a broad spectrum of what passes for the Christian
Church does not understand Grace – they are taught religion.

© Sprozzy talks Godstuff - 2020 19

 Religion is performance or works based.

 Adherents are trying to make themselves

acceptable to God by their own efforts
instead of surrendering to the truth, which is,
that Jesus paid our dept.

 Only by trusting in the substitute sacrifice of

Jesus can we come under Grace.

© Sprozzy talks Godstuff - 2020 20

 The truth is that Jesus paid a price we cannot
pay – our debt is fully paid by God Himself.

 Now we are under GRACE.

 Our heavenly Father sees us in Jesus.

 That is GRACE!.

© Sprozzy talks Godstuff - 2020 21

 The God of Grace is characterised by the following.

 God loves us (He always did!)

 God is delighted that we have accepted Jesus as Lord

and that we are now in relationship with Him.

 God is committed to blessing us.

 God wants us to enjoy dominion over all

circumstances.

© Sprozzy talks Godstuff - 2020 22

 God has given us His authority to represent Him, to
heal the sick, to cast out demons and to reveal the
gospel unto salvation.

 God desires us to freely enjoy health, wealth, peace,

happiness and joy.

 He has covenanted with us so that we can rule the

earth, bringing glory to Jesus.

© Sprozzy talks Godstuff - 2020 23

 God is not angry with us.
 God is not disappointed or shocked by our mistakes or
failures – He doesn’t even see them because He sees
us in Christ Jesus – that’s Grace!.
 God is not counting our sins and transgressions against
us.
 God’s love for us is not proportional to our
performance.
 God is love and He loves us because we are in Jesus.
© Sprozzy talks Godstuff - 2020 24
 Here are some of the errors that are taught
today.
 God is angry because you don’t measure up.
 God is a harsh, cruel God just waiting to catch
you out.
 God hates your sin - so He is punishing you.
 God is ready to judge you.
 The reason your prayers are not being answered
is because you are not holy enough - you aren’t
worthy.
 God will love you more if you perform better.

© Sprozzy talks Godstuff - 2020 25

 None of that is true! - But here is the Truth

 Ephesians 2: 8 – 9

 For it is by free grace (God’s unmerited favour) that you are saved
(delivered from judgment and made partakers of Christ’s salvation)
through [your] faith.
 And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [of your own doing, it came not
through your own striving], but it is the gift of God;
 Not because of works [not the fulfilment of the Law’s demands], lest any
man should boast. [It is not the result of what anyone can possibly do, so no
one can pride himself in it or take glory to himself.]

© Sprozzy talks Godstuff - 2020 26

 And look what it says in the next verse!
 10 For we are God’s [own] handiwork (His workmanship), recreated in Christ
Jesus, [born anew] that we may do those good works which God predestined
(planned beforehand) for us [taking paths which He prepared ahead of time],
that we should walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and
made ready for us to live].
 God does not bless us because of our good works or activity or because of
religious fervour.
 We are predestined to do the works that He has prepared for us to do.
 We must not attempt to do works with the intention of getting His approval in
order to gain His favour.
 That would be like saying the atoning sacrifice of Jesus was not enough and
we too have to atone in order that God will notice us!

© Sprozzy talks Godstuff - 2020 27

 He blesses us because we have accepted the substitute sacrifice of Jesus
on the cross and we have surrendered to the fact that He paid a price we
cannot pay.

 He blesses us because He loves us and delights in us!

 He blesses us because we have accepted Jesus as saviour. We cannot

save ourselves.

 He blesses us because we are under grace.

Galatians 2:16
16 Yet we know that a man is justified or reckoned righteous
and in right standing with God not by works of the Law, but
[only] through faith and [absolute] reliance on and adherence
to and trust in Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).

[Therefore] even we [ourselves] have believed on Christ

Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by
works of the Law [for we cannot be justified by any
observance of the ritual of the Law given by Moses], because
by keeping legal rituals and by works no human being can
ever be justified (declared righteous and put in right standing
with God).
© Sprozzy talks Godstuff - 2020 29
 If we try to follow the Law, if we live under
Law, we deny and reject Grace.

 We have fallen from Grace if we try to earn

righteousness and we are thereby denying
Christ and His substitute sacrifice.

 So it is very important to fully understand

Grace.
© Sprozzy talks Godstuff - 2020 30
 In John 10:10 Jesus says:
 The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy.
 I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance [to the full, till it
overflows].
 So where are we now?
 We are in receipt of Gods unconditional love.
 The highest price has been paid for our freedom.
 The Son of God has destroyed the works of the devil.
 1 John 3:8
 …. The reason the Son of God was made manifest (visible) was to undo (destroy,
loosen, and dissolve) the works the devil [has done].

 Our response is to love Him.

 We no longer live in fear of Gods punishment

or exclusion.

 Once we know the Lord, we no longer

serve Him out of fear – but out of love.

 We seek to honour Him with our lives.

© Sprozzy talks Godstuff - 2020 32
 The big difference is that now we have the Holy Spirit dwelling in us and
He enables us to make a response which overcomes that which previously
enslaved us.

 We no longer seek a relationship with our Heavenly Father through

WORKS- or by trying to be good enough- or trying to get everything right,
or to be perfect –in order that He will accept us.

 Why? - because Jesus has already qualified us and now we are under
grace.

 We have given up striving to be acceptable and have accepted that Jesus

totally qualified us by His substitute sacrifice.

 He suffered our punishment so that we could go free.

 Now we are free to choose to live righteously.

© Sprozzy talks Godstuff - 2020 33
 When we are under GRACE
 We are FREE (loosed from our chains)
 We are EMPOWERED by the Holy Spirit to
make right choices and live a life which
honours the Lord Jesus and brings Him Glory.
 We are in receipt of Gods promises, blessings
and favour.
 Our Heavenly Father is delighted with us.
 We are loved.
 That is GRACE!
