Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the background of the study, statement of the problem,

significant of the study and the scope and delimitations of the study.

Background of the Study

Career choice is influenced by multiple factors including personality, interests,

self-concept, cultural identity, globalization, socialization, role model, social support and

available resources such as information and financial (Kerka, 2000). Career choice is

thought to be important in making life decisions especially in college. However, several

college students change their course, in the middle of semester, for several reasons and/or

factors. This made the researchers think, “Why they enrolled this course anyway?”

Several studies revealed that families and friends are the biggest influences in one’s life

choices. People tend to make decisions considering the perception of parents and friends

(Malubay et. al, 2015). Pascual’s study (2014), on the other hand, revealed that the

availability of work after college is the first consideration of students in choosing a

course in college. Most of the students prefer to take scientific related field courses, or

the “popular courses” for Filipinos. The least preferred courses are in the Agricultural

field. But what about the Hospitality Management program? One of the reasons to study

hospitality management is because it offers great job and career opportunities for anyone

who wants to get involved in the world of tourism (Study Abroad Portal, 2021)
2

However, the researchers observed some of the students of the Bachelor of

Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM) Program who shift from BSHM course to

other non-related courses, in the middle of the semester by the influence of their friends,

by decisions of their parents due to expenses, and other factors, as they mentioned. This

baffled the researchers, hence this study.

The aim of this research is to determine the factors that influence the decisions of the
first-year students in taking up Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management program.
The researchers also want to see if there is a significant relationship between factors
influencing BSHM students to their academic performances. The students’ performance
factor is one of most challenging aspects in many academic literatures because it
affects their performance in academic, social, psychological, economic, and
environmental cohesion (Vermunt, 2005; Azhar et al., 2014). Many factors have an
influence on the performance of the students but vary from person to person and
institution to institution.

Studies have identified casual factors responsible for weak academic performance
at many institutional throughout the world (Diseth et al., 2010; Wintre et al., 2011;
Azhar et al., 2014; Fernex et al., 2015; Sæl et al., 2017). In addition, most of these
studies focus on three elements which are personal, teacher, and institutional
factors in students’ performance. It has also been indicated that the student’s
performance in academic affected by economics factor which may likely influence
students grades (Sunshine, et al., 2015). Students learning and gain can also be affected
by many multiple factors and their educational success which heavily depend on
their societal economic position. Also, it is observed that parent’s income or social
status has a definite effect on students academic performance and examination
grades status positively or negatively (Vermunt, 2005; Azhar et al., 2014).
3

Statement of the Problem

1. What is the profile of the 1st year students in BS in Hospitality Management

in terms of;

1.1 Age;

1.2 Sex;

1.3 Civil status;

1.4 SHS strand;

1.5 Family income;

1.6 Parent occupation;

2. What are the factors influencing 1st year student in choosing HM Program?

3. What are the academic performances of BSHM students?

4. Is there significant relationship between Influencing 1 ST year students in

choosing BSHM to their program to their Academic Performances.

Significant of the Study

This study will have significance to several persons and institutions, specifically:

To the PSU Roxas campus to present necessary factors that will be necessary for

counseling students on choosing Hospitality Management program.

To BSHM students, this study will help enlighten the 1st year student, being

novice in Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management, and understand the factors

influencing their decisions.

To the Parents, they will be aware of the many factors influencing their children's

course, so that they can support them in their chosen career.

4

To the researchers, In this study, the researchers will be able to appreciate their

course and will give them knowledge and skills in writing research.

To the future researchers, the result of this study will guide future researchers

who wants to further the same field of study.

Scope and Delimitations of the study

This study entitled “Influencing Factors of Bshm Students in choosing their

CHAPTER 2

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This chapter presents related studies analyzed by the researcher to substantiate the

result of this study. This served as a basis for formulating the framework of the study. It

also includes the definition of terms.

Multiple Factors influencing BSHM students to their academic performance.

The influenced of career choice has a lasting impact on an individual. It serves to

be a predictor and determinant of their prospective level of income, nature of work and

consequently leaves a mark on the personality, demeanor and outlook of an individual

(kazi and Akhlaq 2017).

Hewitt (2010) posit that factors influencing career choice can either be intrinsic,

extrinsic or both. Hewitt further states that most people are influenced by careers that

their parents favor, others follow careers that their educational choices have opened for

them, some choose to follow their passion, regardless of how much or little it will make

them while others choose the careers that give high income.

Factors such as family preferences, teachers’ advice, remuneration from a job, the

scope of professional development, academic major, career development training, and

others are known to be involved in the development of career interests or the shaping of

career choices. (Siddiky and Akter, 2021). To discuss these factors explicitly. The

researchers present the following themes:

An individual’s aptitude and intellectual abilities are important. An aptitude is a

potential for success in an area after undergoing some training but a layman may define
6

aptitude as a flair for something. The context in which people live, their personal

aptitudes, and educational attainment are other things that do influence people’s career

choice (Bandura, et al., 2014). It was found that students who receive help in exploring

careers and planning programs of study related to their career interest are more likely to

see school as meaningful (Pascual, 2014). Thus, choosing careers according to personal

preference should always be supported and guided.

Individual being, one is embodied with his own ability to think and decide on his

own but sometimes because of many influencing factors in the environment that affect

how one decides on things, student’s right decision on the course he chooses in college is

a must because either small or big, the amount he exerts on it would shape his life and

future. It remains a fact that the decision you made yesterday can make a huge impact in

your lives today and in the future. According to (Sadjail et al. nd.) personal preferences

and interests are early as high school and senior high, students have already their own

course preferences as imputed to the own interest. This influences them to opt for their

chosen course of study rather than being moved by others choice and suggestions.

Family related factors affect students’ choice of course in college. Study revealed

that Filipino immigrants and non-immigrants rely heavily on their family’s decision-

making. Students cope by following their parents’ advice. They also have to cope with an

expectation of financially supporting the family upon completing their education. Studies

from other Asian countries also show parents’ impact in decision making of students

when it comes to students’ course preference (Saysay, Karen-Lyn, 2011).

The family especially parents indeed play a vital role in the decision-making

Process of a student, a parent’s point of view is always into consideration. Finlayson

7

(2009). Parent are more influential person in student’s choices of colleges and

universities, and course of study. Further research into the role of tradition, that a high

school counselor, would be beneficial (Khoo et al.2015)

A large number of students were enrolled in courses which their parents suggest.

They opted to take a particular course out of their preferences or against their own

interest. Parents, being convinced by present social trends, put strong conviction in

selecting courses for their children without considering their expertise and interest. This

is one factor that obstructs the interest of students to perform well in school. On the

contrary, there were some of them who took the chance and learned to accept the course

(Sadjail et al. nd.)

Another study highlighted that parental involvement have positive impact on

Hmong / Mong adolescents’ education and career choice (Thao, Nealcheng Xeng, 2009).

The studies presented are important to the present study since the studies explain the

importance of taking parents’ advice and permission in choosing a college course.

Aside from family related factors, economic factors which includes the

employability and availability of job in the future is also considered by students.

Employability, i.e., the realistic feasibility of being employed in a stable job, then

becomes an important factor in career decision-making. Coming from a collective

culture, immigrant parents and children seek careers that will support the whole family.

Moreover, it is found that Asian American men and women tend to be more interested in

technical fields, the physical sciences, and nonenterprising business positions over

artistic, social, or socially interactive business careers (Leong, et al., 2004).

8

Peer influence is also a factor that affects students’ decision in choosing a course

to take since as a teenager, it is important for them to feel accepted in a group or society.

There are different effects when a student refers all his/her decision on his/her peer or

friends. Sometimes, friends or peers can affect one’s decision like for example if most of

his friends will decide to take hospitality course among others, most probably he tends

to end up taking a degree where they as a friend or peer wants. Kaneez and Medha

(2018).

The Demographic Profile of Respondents

Age

According to the study of (Kenya 2012). Age brackets of 18-28 years which

clearly shows that most of them are young people aspiring to be in the Hospitality

industry. (Lucas, 1993) the hospitality industry seems to favor younger employees in the

workforce, and older employees are outnumbered by their younger colleagues.

(Whannell, 2010) examine one cohort of 18- to 22-year-old students in a tertiary bridging

program that was conducted t a regional university in Queensland. Current statistics

confirms this, stating that in the Norwegian hospitality industry as many as 1/3 are under

the age of 24 years (NHO Reiseliv, 2018). In developed countries, such as Norway,

pension schemes tend to allow or even encourage early retirement. However, the

government in developed countries now worries about the sustainability of the pension

systems, as the postemployment life has increased (Mor Barak, 2017).

Sex

Gender In Indonesia, the choice of job is determined by its suitability with the

men and women destiny. It was established that there was no relationship between beliefs
9

towards gender stereotyping and career path (Kimaro & Lauo, 2016). However, in

Indonesia, particularly in Bali, the community’s mindset related to gender-stereotyped

jobs still exists. This mindset may affect job preference or choice and career shift. A

study conducted in Bali by Setiyarti and Lestari (2020) shows that female graduates of

tourism schools who work in the tourism sector or industry tend to take career shift to

choose a job with multi-roles, as a wife and a career woman. Male students, on average,

think that they will continue to work in hospitality and tourism industries and do not want

to shift elsewhere, while for female students, on average, they will leave hospitality

industry after starting a family and looking for a workplace with more flexible time. This

is a mindset. Consequently, tourism education institutions should anticipate the

graduates’ preference shift their careers. Meanwhile, from several studies in various

countries, it is reported that there exits gender discrimination in terms of proportion and

'career development' opportunities in the tourism and hospitality industry, which may be

one of the triggers for career shifts. The reasons for 'career shift', among others, include

better income or security, family reasons, traditions or mindset; barrier and

discrimination in career development, inaccurate choice of major with a prospect career.

Civil Status

According to the result of (Kenya, 2012) Marital Status of the students show that a

majority of 76.67% were single. Korir (2012) where he concluded that Hospitality and

Tourism students are mostly female, and that females are more attracted to Hospitality

and Tourism programs than males. Hence, it can be said that Hospitality and Tourism

programs are generally female-oriented.

10

Senior high School strand

Senior High School is two years of specialized upper secondary education;

students may choose a specialization based on aptitude, interests, and school capacity.

The choice of career track will define the content of the subjects a student will take in

Grades 11 and 12 (Official Gazette, 2012) Grade 12 graduates who took the TVL track

and obtained NC II and III may be hired as middle level skilled workers in home

economics (i.e., caregiving, cooking, baking, tailoring/dressmaking, events management,

housekeeping, tour guiding, wellness), industrial arts (i.e., automotive, carpentry,

construction painting, electrical installation, welding, machining, plumbing, refrigeration

and air conditioning), agri-fishery arts (i.e., crop and animal production, animal health

care, food processing, horticulture), and ICT (broadband installation, call center services,

medical transcription, technical drafting). SHS graduates may also be hired in entry level

positions outside the TVL track, such as bookkeeping and clerical work, among others

(Orbeta et. al 2019).

Family Income

Family income the total annual gross income of a family from salary, business

results, and various investments. In addition, there are many other categories of income,

including rental income, government subsidy payments, interest income and dividend

income. Family or household income can be interpreted as income obtained from several

sources of income: husband's income and wife's income. Families with high incomes will

find it easier to manage financial management, such as setting aside funds for savings,

investment for retirements, paying bills correctly in full and on time, and setting aside
11

funds for insurance. Thus, families with higher incomes will find it easier and wiser to

manage their family finances. This is in line with Brilianti and Lutfi (2020), Fatmawati

and Lutfi (2021)

Parent’s occupations

Family background has often been considered an influential factor in the

aspiration of the offspring of the family. Children whose parents are active politicians,

business men/women, artisans, farmers etc. are deemed to be greatly influenced by their

parental occupations in their choice of career. Also several studies have been carried out

to determine the influence of parental socio-economic status and vocational aspirations of

their children. Some of these studies are done at the primary school level, while others

are at the secondary school level. We shall examine the findings of some of those

researches to see how they will apply to this study. In their paper “Parental socio-

economic status as predictor of Vocational Aspiration of secondary school students in

Nigeria: implication for peace, curriculum Planning and Special Education”, Obiyo and

Eze (2015) observed that researches have always associated the educational aspirations of

students to the socio-economic status (SES) of their parents.

Whiston (2004) suggested to students, perceived parental expectations had a

stronger influence than socio- economic status, but the influence was indirect through the

variables of student's occupational expectation, which in turn affected career choice.

Conceptual Framework

The primary objective of this study is to formulate the Factors Influencing BSHM

Students in choosing their program to their Academic Performance at Palawan State

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter shows and discuss the steps or way of the researchers in gathering

the necessary data and information that will be used in the entire study. It also shows the

type of research, research designs, research population, research locale, research

instrument, Data gathering procedure and data analysis.

Research Design

This study uses of quantitative researcher design, to determine the Influencing

Factors of BSHM Students in Choosing their Program in Relation to Academic

Performance. Quantitative design is aimed at discovering how many people think, act, or

feel in a specific way. It involves a large sample size, concentrating on the quality of the

responses, as opposed to gaining the more focused or emotional insight that is the aim of

quantitative research. Researchers used the Pearson correlation (r) the most common way

of measuring a linear correlation. It is a number between -1 and 1 that measures the

strength and directions of the relationships between two variables. Researchers also used

survey questionnaire to gathered data from the respondents.

Research Locale

The respondents of this research study is the first year BSHM students of Palawan

State University- Roxas Campus.

Research Population

This study employs total population of the First-year BSHM students enrolled this 2 nd

semester, SY 2022-2023 at PSU Roxas; thus, 86 respondents will take part the study.
15

Research Instrument

The study will use a survey questionnaire as instrument in gathering the data.

This questionnaire is composed two parts. The first part is the profile of the respondents,

specifically: Age, Sex, Civil status, SHS strand, Family income, and Parent occupation.

The second part will be answered and interpreted using 4-Likert Scale, this is the factors

influencing BSHM student to their academic performance.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researcher will present a letter of approval to the Director, Research

Instructor to ask permission for our research title. When the titled was approved, will start

to do the chapter one to three. These three chapters will be checked by the researcher’s

adviser. After checking the paper, the researchers will get an approval from the research

office to have a defense proposal. After the revision, the researcher will ask again a

permission to gather data.

In a gathering procedure, an instrument is formulated and that is through

distribution of questionnaires if the respondents are currently present in the locals and if

the respondents is not available, the researcher will leave the questioner to them and ask

them to answer it if they have time, also tell them when they are going to collect it. To

have the list of hospitality management students enrolled in school year 2022-2023 and

their academic performance, the researcher will ask and send a letter to the registrar

office. After the data was gathered, the researcher will tally all the data. When tallying is

done, the researcher will analyze and interpret the data gathered from the respondents

.
16

Statistical Treatment

This study will use frequency, percentage and rank to describe the data

regarding the profile of the respondents, and also it will use likert scale to test the factors

influencing to choose HM Program. And will use percentage frequency that will be

displayed as table. The process of creating a percentage frequency distribution involves

identifying the total number of observed then counting the total number of observation

within each data point or grouping of data points and dividing each data point by the total

number of observations.

In addition, tables and figures will be used to interpret the data. This will help to

support conclusion and illustrate concept. To test the hypothesis, the study will use
