Butacod (Butamirate Citrate)

Therapeutic Group: Cough Suppressant


Overview:
Butamirate Citrate is a Cough Suppressant that acts directly on the brain’s cough center to suppress
cough. It is used to relieve dry (non-productive) cough. Dry cough may be caused by a recent viral
infection.
Butamirate Citrate is also used for pre & post-operative cough sedation in patients who will
undergo surgical procedures and bronchoscopy.
Presentation
Table : 50 mg
Syrup : 7.5 mg/ 5 ml
Preparation
Butacod SR Tablet: Each sustained release tablet contains Butamirate Citrate 50 mg.
Butacod Syrup: Each 5 ml syrup contains Butamirate Citrate 7.5 mg.
Pharmacology
Butamirate Citrate acts directly on the brain’s cough center to suppress cough. It is rapidly absorbed
and begins working 30 minutes after first administration. Its long-lasting action works up to 12 hours.
Butamirate Citrate is safe, codeine-free, non-narcotic & non-sedating. Mode of Action: Butamirate

citrate is rapidly and completely absorbed after oral administration. Maximum concentration is
reached within 9 hours with sustain release tablet. Butamirate citrate is extremely protein bound
and Plasma elimination half-life is about 13 hours.
Indication
Butamirate Citrate is used to relieve dry (non-productive) cough. Dry cough may be caused by a
recent viral infection. Butamirate Citrate is also used for pre & post-operative cough sedation in
patients who will undergo surgical procedures and bronchoscopy.
Dose and Administration
Butacod SR Tablet: Adolescents over 12 years old: 1-2 tablets daily
Adults : 2-3 tablets daily at 8 to 12 hours intervals.
Butacod Syrup:
Children (3-6 years of age): 5 ml 3 times daily.
6-12 years: 10 ml 3 times daily.
Adults : 15 ml 4 times daily.
Contraindication
When the patient is hypersensitive to the active substance or any of the excipients.

Side Effects
Tolerance of Butamirate Citrate is good. Adverse reactions such as rash, nausea, diarrhoea and
vertigo have been observed in a few rare cases (a total of approximately 1% of treated cases in
clinical trials), resolving after dose reduction or treatment withdrawal.
Drug Interaction
Interaction with Aspirin, Simvastatin, Warfarin, Omeprazole, Furosemide, Ramipril, Acetaminophen
etc.
Use in special groups
Pregnancy and Lactation
No adverse fetal effects have been observed in animal reproduction studies, and there have
been no controlled studies in pregnant women. Butamirate Citrate should therefore not be used
during the first trimester of pregnancy. During the remainder of pregnancy, Butamirate Citrate
can be used if definitely indicated by a physician but with caution.
As a general rule, for safety reasons, in the absence of data on elimination of the active
substance in breast milk, the benefits of Butamirate Citrate administration during breast feeding
should be carefully weighed against the risks.
Storage
Keep away from light and moisture, store below 30°C. Keep all the medicines out of the reach of
children.

Butacod SR Tablet: Each box contains 3 x 10 tablets in Alu-Alu blister pack.
Butacod Syrup: Each bottle contains 100 ml syrup.
