Experiment 1: Uncontrolled rectifier

Objectives:

a) Implementation of single phase uncontrolled (HW & FW) rectifier using diodes.
1. Design of capacitive filter to restrict the output voltage ripple to 10%.
2. Observe the effect of load change on output voltage ripple along with capacitor.
3. Observe the effect of filter capacitor on the nature of supply current.

b) Implementation of Three phase uncontrolled (Three pulse & Six pulse) rectifier using
diodes.
1. Design of capacitive filter to restrict the output voltage ripple to 5%.
2. Observe the effect of load change on output voltage ripple along with capacitor.
3. Observe the effect of filter capacitor on the nature of supply current.
Apparatus required:
(i). 230/12 V single phase transformers, Three phase auto transformer
(ii). 1Ω, 25 W resistor or current sensors
(iii). Two-channel oscilloscope
(iv). 47Ω , 100Ω, 500 Ω 20W resistors
(v). Filter capacitors as per the requirement

Instructions:

(i). Probes of Multi-channel DSOs are to be connected carefully, considering the

electrical isolation and common grounds of the complete circuit.
(ii). Find the average output voltage for given ac input using analytic expression and
compare it with the experimental results.
(iii). Calculate the value of the filter capacitance for a given value of ripple factor
(iv). Compare the source current for rectifiers and comment on their applicability.
(v). Compare the source current rectifiers with and without capacitor.
Results:

(i). Related waveforms are to be stored from the oscilloscope.

(ii). The capacitance required was _____𝜇𝐹 for half-wave and _____𝜇𝐹 for full-wave
rectifier.
(iii) The capacitance required was _____𝜇𝐹 for Three pulse and _____𝜇𝐹 for Six pulse
rectifier.
(iv). The response for instruction (iv) and (v) shall be written on a separate sheet and
shall be submitted along with the manual for both objectives (a&b)
