Vidalas are folk melodies typical of the north region of Argentina. They are usually vocal and
syllabic, and they feature a characteristic melodic contour that plays ambiguously on both
major and minor modes (i.e. F major and/or D minor), usually concluding with a phrase
resolving on the third of the minor mode. Although their forms depend very much on the
text, the most common form in vidalas consists of alternations of coplas and estribillos (in the
manner of verses and chorus). Vidalas are in general performed by one or two singers, the
second voice singing in parallel thirds, a cappella or accompanied with strumming chords in
a guitar or simple rhythmic figurations on a caja. This percussion instrument is a double-
headed flat drum with a buzzing string of horse hair on the back of the drum. The drum is
hung on one hand and hit with a stick with leather or cloth tip. Although these melodies are
not choral in their original form, there already exists a tradition in Argentina of performing
them as arrangements for vocal ensembles.

1for afligidos. Dropping the s is a common feature of spoken Spanish in many countries.
Here it also allows the diphthong with ay.

Notes on the pronunciation:

As folk music has become part of the urban choir repertoire, it has become acceptable to use
correct Castellano pronunciation, which is common in choral singing practice throughout
Latin America. Otherwise, the following guide can be used to obtain a pronunciation akin to
the folk singers in Tucuman:

Dios, despido: use soft aspirated s (h as in host)

llorar, lloro, yo, ayer, ella: pronounced iorar, ioro, io, aier, eia (i as in indian)
