An exclusive introduction to IEC 62368-1 to better understand safety requirements for audio/video,
information and communication technology equipment

Hazard-based safety engineering (HBSE) is a Using the HBSE methodology the IEC developed
methodology developed over 25 years ago for IEC 62368-1, an international standard applicable to
designing safe products that has been adapted for the the safety of electrical and electronic equipment within
development of safety standards. With this approach, the field of audio, video, information and communication
potentially hazardous energy sources are identified technology, including business and office machines, with
clearly and safeguards put into place in order to mitigate a rated voltage not exceeding 600 V. This is a product
the hazard and make a safe product. As a result, HBSE safety standard that classifies energy sources, prescribes
principles can be applied to a broad range of products possible safeguards against hazardous energy sources,
since the requirements are performance based rather and provides requirements for these safeguards. The
than prescriptive. standard is in its third edition (2018), with a fourth edition
expected in 2023.
