1 Man discovered fire many thousands years ago. The first time he saw fire was
2 probably when a tree was struck by lightning. He soon learned how to make fire for
3 himself. However man probably made his fire by rubbing two sticks each other. Fire was
4 very important to man. He needed fire to keep himself warm at night. He used fire to
5 cook his food. He used fire to frighten away enemies and wild animals. In some parts of
6 the world he used fire to signal messages. Red Indians, for example, used fire to do
7 smoke signals. In some other countries people lit fires to warn their friends of danger.
8 Fire was very also used to give light. Before the invention of oil lamp, men used burning
9 sticks as torches. And before man discovery gas and electricity, he hung small fires in
10 wire baskets from posts to light the streets. One man even used fire to tell the time. He
11 invented a candle clock. He made a candle that took exactly twelve hours burning. Then
12 he marked this candle in twelve equal parts. He lit the candle and could tell the time by
13 counting the number of parts left of the burning candle. But the candle clock did not
14 always work well. If there was a wind blowing on the candle, the flame burned too quick.

Task 2: READING COMPREHENSION
Read the passage and choose the best answer for each question below.
Most human diets contain between 10 and 15 percent of their total calories as protein. The
rest of the dietary energy conies from carbohydrates, fats, and in some people, alcohol. The
proportion of calories from fats varies from 10 percent in poor communities to 40 percent or more
in rich communities.
In addition to providing energy, fats have several other functions in the body. The fat-soluble
vitamins, A, D, E, and K, are dissolved in fats, as their name implies. Good sources of these vitamins
have high oil or fat content, and the vitamins are stored in the body’s fatty tissues. In the diet, fats
cause food to remain longer in the stomach, thus increasing the feeling of fullness for some time
after a meal is eaten. Fats add variety, taste, and texture to foods, which accounts for the
popularity of fried foods. Fatty deposits in the body have an insulating and protective value. The
curves of the human female body are due mostly to strategically located fat deposits.
Whether a certain amount of fat in the diet is essential to human health is not definitely
known. When rats are fed a fat-free diet, their growth eventually ceases, their skin becomes
inflamed and scaly, and their reproductive systems are damaged. Two fatty acids, linoleic and

6
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
arachidonic acids, prevent these abnormalities and hence are called eseential fatty acids. They also
are required by a number of other animals, but their roles in human beings are debatable. Most
nutritionists consider linoleic fatty acid an essential nutrient for humans.
