Right Triangle and Pythagorean Theorem Name:
Teacher: Mr. Zeki
1. Right Triangle and Pythagorean Theorem

c hypotenuse (opposite of right angle or the longest side of a triangle )

b
The Pythagorean Theorem
In a right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of
the other two right sides.

a² + b² = c²
2. Some Pythagorean Triples
• 3, 4, 5
Zeki Hoca’s rule
5 3² + 4² = 5² 3² = 9 = 4 + 5
3 9 + 16 = 25 take square of 3 (it must be odd number) and then write the
result (9) as a sum of two consecutive numbers 9 = 4 + 5
25 = 25

4k 8 12 16

• 5, 12, 13
Zeki Hoca’s rule
13 5² + 12² = 13² 5² = 25 = 12 + 13
5 25 + 144 = 169 take square of 5 (it must be odd number) and then write the
result (25) as a sum of two consecutive numbers 25 = 12+ 13
169 = 169

12k 24 36

• 7, 24, 25
Zeki Hoca’s rule
25 7² + 24² = 25² 7² = 49 = 24 + 25
7 49 + 576 = 625 (7 is odd number)

625 = 625

• You can make more Pythagorean triples
3. Examples
