COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:


At the end of this course student will be able to:
1. Explain the principles and features of effective oral communication. (C2, A1, LO1)
2. Analyse the features which are important to become an effective public speaker to be
presented orally. (C4, LO3, CTPS2)
3. Prepare an appropriate speech based on information obtained from various sources to be
presented in a formal context. (C6, A4, LO3, LO6, CTPS2, LL1)
4. Deliver a speech by incorporating effective public speaking techniques in a professional
manner. (C3, P3, A5, LO2, LO4, LO8, CS7, EM3)
5. Present a critical feedback, in groups, based on public speaking presentations. (C5, LO3,
LO4, LO5, CTPS2, CS2, TS4)

CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT OBJECTIVES:


Students should be able to:
1. answer a 30-minute quiz on the principles and features of effective oral communication and
the features which are important to become an effective public speaker.
2. plan and write an appropriate speech script based on the information obtained from various
sources for a prepared speech delivery.
3. deliver a 15-minute public speaking speech and two (2) 10-minute impromptu speeches by
incorporating effective public speaking techniques.
4. present and provide critical feedback based on public speaking presentations via group
discussion and individual oral presentation.

STIMULUS:

Public speaking is the art of delivering compelling messages to an audience. It involves conveying ideas,
information, or opinions in a clear, organised, and persuasive manner. Effective public speaking requires careful
preparation, confident delivery, and engaging body language. It is a valuable skill that can influence and inspire
others.By mastering public speaking, individuals can captivate listeners, build trust, and leave a lasting impact.
Whether addressing a small group or a large crowd, the power of public speaking lies in its ability to convey
messages that resonate and drive positive change.

The Big Idea: Empower through impactful public speaking


Task 1: Quiz (Individual) - 15%

A 30-minute quiz consisting 15 multiple choice questions and 5 structured questions will be carried out
during class and will be answered individually.

You will be assessed on your ability in understanding (C2) and analyzing (C4) information on
principles and features effective oral communication and the important features of an effective public
speaker.

Task 2: Public Speaking (Individual)- 35%

i. Script writing (25%)


You are required to:
 select a topic of your interest for your public speaking presentation.
 choose the speech structure of your choice from either informative, persuasive or
argumentative.
 prepare an outline of your public speaking script.
 write a 500-word script for your public speaking presentation based on the outline.
 Include all the relevant materials used for references as appendices.

ii. Public Speaking (10%)


You are required to:
present and deliver a 15-minute public speaking presentation incorporating the elements of effective
speech for public speaking as follows:
- Introducing the topic
- Presenting the content
- Making a conclusion
- Inviting participation
- Using an appropriate presentation aids

You will be assessed on your ability to expand and improve thinking skills by creating (C6) own speech
by evaluating information (CTPS2), source for and manage relevant information from varioussources
(LL1). You will also be assessed on use of moral and professional ethics when delivering a
speech(EM3).

Task 3: Impromptu Speech (Individual) - 20%


You are assigned to deliver two (2) impromptu speech presentations. The duration of each
presentation is 10 minutes. The topics will be selected prior to the presentation and are based on the
following:
i. Impromptu Speech 1 (10%)
- Any one of the topics covered in the course.
ii. Impromptu Speech 2 (10%)
- The selected objects (realia)/ picture cards (scenery/ events/ situations)

You will be assessed on your ability to apply (C3) the appropriate language use and communication
skills when delivering a speech (CS7)

Task 4: Critical Feedback - 30%


i. Group Discussion (20%)
In groups of three (3), organize a group discussion to critically analyze on the respective public speaking
presentations carried out by your group members based on speech evaluation criteria.

ii. Oral Presentation (10%)


Individually, present your 15-minute oral presentation reflecting on the strengths and weaknesses of
both of your prepared and impromptu speeches. Your reflection can also be on the most significant
element or experience that you have learned most during the course.

You will be assessed on your ability in evaluating (C5) a public speaking presentation, listening and
responding to the ideas of other people (CS2) and displaying good teamwork skills (TS4).

TOTAL MARKS: 100%


COURSEWORK REQUIREMENTS:

a) The article should be typed using Arial font size 12 with 1.5-line spacing.

b) The writing style, sources and references cited should adhered to the APA (American
Psychological Association 7th Edition) format. Adherence to APA rules governing citation of
reference sources will enhance your ability to communicate effectively.

c) The coursework should show originality in work, maturity and of academic quality.

d) Plagiarism is strictly prohibited. No duplication of assignments from other coursework is


allowed.

e) You should adhere to the deadline. Late submissions will not be accepted.

f) The cover page should have the following information:

iv. Class/Group
