This is your process

Based on what you told us, this is what your process looks like.

Good to know
Valid passport? What documents to bring? And what about
insurances?

Make sure you have a valid passport!

You need to check that your passport will be valid for your
entire stay in Sweden – and make sure the same applies for
everyone joining you. You can only get a permit that’s valid
for as long as your passport.

Save documents
Save all the documents related to your employment because
you might need them later when you want to apply for an
extension to your work permit (documents like pay slips,
insurance etc.).

Check that you’re insured

In order to be able to extend your work permit, you must
have had health insurance, life insurance, occupational injury
insurance and occupational pension insurance for the entire
period your previous Swedish work permit was valid.

Register with the Swedish Public Employment Service

Children over 16 years old and your partner can also get
work permits. Everyone who’s entitled to work in Sweden

Apply for a work permit

To live and work in Sweden for a period, the first thing you need
is an offer of employment at a company or an organization in
Sweden.

You’ll need to have an official offer of employment from an

organisation or company in Sweden to be able to apply for a
work permit.

Your employer creates an offer of employment

In Sweden, employers have a lot of responsibility especially
towards their employees. It’s essential that they know what
they need to do.

English/Employers.html)

The employer can register the offer of employment via the

Migration Agency’s online service
(https://www.migrationsverket.se/English/Contact-us/E-
services.html)

Apply online
When your employer’s done what they need to do, you’ll be
emailed a link that you need to click. Now you’ll be able to
submit your application after answering some questions
about your job and your background. It’s a good idea to
have your passport at hand. You’ll also need information
about your skills and educational background.
Once you’ve answered the questions, you can submit your
application online.

Make sure the information you include is clear and concise.

Documents you need

https://www.officialswedishservices.se 3/7
3/14/2021 Flytta till Sverige

When you submit your application online, you need to

include scanned or photographed copies of the following
documents:

copies of the pages of each traveler’s passport that show

personal data, photo, signature, passport number,
country of issue, period of validity, the bar code on the
identity page, and if they have permits to live in any
other countries than their country of origin.
marriage certificate or equivalent if you are married or in
a registered partnership respectively.
If you have been living with your partner in your country
of origin, you will need to provide documents to prove
this.
child’s birth certificate
adoption documents if the child was adopted
if the child’s other legal guardian won’t be joining you
Sweden, you will need their written consent for the child
to be able to move here with you
Power of attorney if you are a legal representative for all
your family members aged over 18 years old who are
also applying.

The documents should be translated into Swedish or English

by an authorized translator. You must always include a copy
of the original document and a copy of the translation of the
same document.

The Swedish Migration Agency receives your

application
You’ll be sent an email once you’ve submitted your
application to the Swedish Migration Agency. But it might
take a few days before the Swedish Migration Agency can see
that you have submitted your application.

It’s difficult to say how long it will take for the Swedish
Migration Agency to decide if you’re allowed to live and work
in Sweden. So we strongly suggest you wait until you have
received your decision before you make any in-depth moving
plans.

You might need to provide extra information

A case officer will contact you if the Swedish Migration
Agency needs any more information from you. If this is the
case, your application could take longer so it’s best if you
include all the information right from the start – and make
sure it’s clear and concise!

The Swedish Migration Agency’s decision

Once the Migration Agency has made their decision, they’ll
send it to the Swedish embassy where you are – and let you
know at the same time

Contact the Swedish embassy

Your local Swedish embassy will let you know if your
application has been approved or rejected. The process is
different depending on the country.

If your application’s approved:

Time to head off to the embassy

Right, now you need to submit your fingerprints and have
your photo taken at your Swedish embassy.

Collect your residence permit card

Your local Swedish embassy will explain what happens when
your residence permit card is ready. Once you have your

Register at the population registry

Since your plan is to stay in Sweden for a year or more, you
should apply with the Swedish Tax Agency to be registered in the
Swedish Population Register.

If you’re planning to stay in Sweden for longer than one

year, you’ll need to register on the population register. You
can submit a joint application to the Swedish Tax Agency and
tell them where you’ll be living. To be able to register on the
population register, you will need your residence permit
cards and your passports.
Once you’re registered, you’ll be sent your personal identity
numbers.

Visit a Swedish Tax Agency service office

After you’ve arrived in Sweden, you’ll have to go to a service
office together within one week. You can prepare for your
meeting in advance by filling in the registration form for
moving to Sweden on the Tax Agency’s website and printing
it out. You can always do this at the service office when you
arrive if you don’t have a printer at home.

The Tax Agency will ask you to tell them a bit more about
yourself, where you live and your family – even if some of
them aren’t in Sweden. So it’s a good idea to make sure you
have information about your family ready. For example you
need to bring a marriage certificate if you are or have been
married. You also need to bring birth certificates if you have
children. If you are not married you may need to bring a
paternity certificate.

When you visit a service office, take your passport and

residence permit card with you. If your cards haven’t arrived
in time for your visit, you can show them at a later date.

themselves by visiting a Swedish Tax Agency service office.

When they go to the service office, they’ll need to take their
passport, residence permit card and – if possible – their
decision for a residence permit. To be able to register you as
their parent, they’ll also need to show their birth certificate.

It will take a few days before your case is visible in the

Swedish Tax Agency system.

The Swedish Tax Agency receive your application

It’s difficult to say how long it will take before you receive
your personal identity numbers, but be prepared to wait a
while before your application has been processed.

You might need to provide extra information

The Tax Agency will contact you via email, phone or letter
sent to the address you provided if they need any more
information from you.

Decision from the Swedish Tax Agency

Once the Tax Agency has made a decision about your
registration, the case officer will send it to the address you
provided in your application.
