Experiment 4
Phase and power measurements
Introduction
The experiment aim is to learn how to measure the phase shift between two
sinusoidal waves by using an oscilloscope and how to measure the power in an AC
circuit. There are two methods to calculate the phase shift: sweep method and
X-Y method.
Theory
The voltage and current in a resistance are in phase, in a pure inductive circuit
voltage and current are not in phase, current lags voltage by 90°, in circuits
containing only capacitance the current leads voltage by 90°. In this experiment
two techniques of phase shift measurement will be used, also power
measurement in Ac circuits will be implemented.
Objectives
Measuring the phase difference between two sinusoidal signal.
The power dissipated in a load at high frequencies.
Materials
• Oscilloscope.
• Function generator.
• Capacitor 47nF.
• 1kΩ and10kΩ resistors.
• Circuit board.

Comments / Discussion
In both methods we had a small error percentage compared to the pre-lab
results.
to measure the phase angle between two signals they must have the same
frequency or else, phase difference can’t be calculated.
Conclusions
We learned in this experiment how to measure the phase shift between two
sinusoidal signals using an oscilloscope in sweep mode and in X-Y mode, and we
also learned how to calculate the power dissipated using X-Y mode on an
oscilloscope.
