EXPERIMENT 1.

In this experiment, you are required to investigate the relationship between

period of oscillation, T and length of the pendulum, ℓ .

Diagram 1

a) Carry out the experiment by using the following steps:

i) Arrangge the apparatus as shown in Diagram 1.

ii) Set up the slotted weight with mass 60 g.
iii) Adjust the length of pendulum, ℓ = 20 cm.
iv) Displace the slotted weight at an angle 30 o form the vertical and release it.
v) Measure and record the time, t1 taken for 20 complete oscilaltions.
vi) Repeat step (vi) and record time as t2.
t 1+t 2
vii) Calculate the average time, t average = .
2
t average
viii) Calculate the period of oscilation , T = and find T2.
20
ix) Repeat the above procedure using length of wire, ℓ = 30.0 cm, 40.0 cm, 50.0 cm
and 60.0 cm.
x) Plot graph T2 against ℓ

ℓ / cm Time for 20 oscillations/ s

T/s T2/s2
