Instruction: Analyze and solve each problem. Write your final answers on answer sheet provided.

Problem # 1: Two concentric heavy steel springs support a load of 9100 N as shown in the figure. The outer spring
is made from a 30-mm diameter wire on a mean diameter of 220 mm and has 22 turns. The inner spring consists of
30 turns made from 20-mm diameter wire on a mean diameter of 160 mm. Using G = 83 GPa, calculate the shearing
stress developed in the two springs. (10 pts)

Problem # 2: The compound shaft made from the same material consisting of two segments AC and CB is firmly
attached to rigid supports. The allowable shear stress in the shaft is limited to 5500 psi. Determine the maximum
torque TO that may be applied at C. Calculate also the angular rotation incurred by segment BC. Use G= 12 x 106
psi. (10 pts)
Problem # 3: The strut AB made from two bars (thickness of each bar = 0.50 in) is connected to a rectangular beam
CD (b = 0.80 in x h = 7.5 in) at joint B. The beam carries a concentrated load of 2750 lb at the end joint D. (a)
determine the minimum diameter of the bolt at B if the shearing stress in the bolt is not to exceed 14000 psi. (b)
determine the minimum diameter of the bolt at B if the allowable bearing stress in the bar plate is 20000 psi. (10
pts)
Detail of joint B

Problem # 4: Four steel bars jointly support a mass of 25 x 103 kg. Initially the temperature is 250C. Bars A and D
have a cross-sectional area of 480 mm2. For bars B and C, the cross-sectional area is 360 mm2. Determine the
elongation of bar A when the temperature becomes 600C. Also, find the axial stress developed in bar C. Use E =
200 GPa and α = 11.7 x 10-6 m/ (m0C). (10 pts)

Problem # 5: A trailer truck crossing a 10-m span circular beam ( D = 400 mm ) has axle loads of 7 kN, 9 kN, and 16 kN
separated respectively by distances of 2 m and 5 m. Calculate the maximum bending stress and transverse stress developed
in the beam. (10 pts)
Problem # 6: For the beam loaded as shown, calculate the values of maximum shearing force and maximum
bending moment. Also, determine the bending moment at E. (15 pts)

Problem # 7: For the overhanging beam loaded as shown, determine the maximum values of flexural stress and
horizontal shearing stress developed. (15 pts)

Problem # 8: A bar made from aluminum (E = 72 GPa) has a diameter of 12 mm. When the bar is subjected to a
tensile axial force P, its diameter is decreased by 0.018 mm. Assume the Poisson’s ratio to be 0.33. Determine the
value of loads P and its axial deformation. (10 pts)
Problem # 9: Seven 7/8-in-diameter rivets fasten the plate to the fixed member. Determine the maximum and
minimum shearing stress developed in any rivet. (10 pts)
