AMM 101 –BASIC MATHEMATICS

DURATION: 2 HOURS

SECTION A: ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS IN THIS SECTION

QUESTION ONE (30 MARKS)

c. Find the solution of the linear system of equations (5 marks)

d. Solve tanθ = 2 sin θ for 0o ≤θ ≤ 360o (5 marks)
e. Find the 7th term in the expansion of (a+b)10 using binomial theorem (5 marks)

f. i. evaluate (2 marks)
ii. in a lottery, a total od 1000 tickets were sold. Determine the number of ways of obtaining
winners of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes if three tickets are drawn one after the other (3 marks)

QUESTION TWO (20 MARKS)

a. Given the function f(x) = 3x +2 and g(x) = 4x – 7, find

b. Consider an ‘if p then q’ statement ‘if you get an A in mathematics, then i will buy you a
laptop.’
Construct a truth table for the statements (5 marks)
c. In a survey of 500 students of a college, it was found that 245 liked watching football, 265 liked
watching hockey and 310 liked watching basketball. Also, 135 liked watching both football and
hockey; 145 liked watching both basketball and hockey and 140 liked watching both football
and basketball. 25 liked watching none of these games. Determine the number of students who
like watching;
i. all the three games (5 marks)
ii. only one of the three given games (5 marks)

a. Find the remainder when is divided by
i. x–1 (2 marks)
ii. 2x – 1 (3 marks)
b. Without using tables or calculators find the value of sin(120o + 45o) (5 marks)
c. ABC is a triangle such that AB =12 cm, BC = 21cm, <ABC = 101o. determine
i. Length AC (2 marks)
ii. <BAC (2 marks)
iii. <ACB (2 marks)
d. Solve the equation 1 + cosθ = 2 sin θ for 0 ≤θ≤360o

QUESTION FOUR (20 MARKS)

a. When a polynomial f(x) is divided by (x - 1) the remainder is 3. When f(x) is divided by


(x+1), the remainder is 5. When f(x) is divided by (x – 2), the remainder is 20. Find the
remainder when f(x) is divided by (x2 -1) (x – 2).

b. How many different seven digit telephone numbers are possible if the first digit cannot be
zero and no digit may repeat? (3 marks)
