USEFUL PHRASES

GENERAL RULES:

- When in formal session, the delegates must refrain from using the first person
singular (There is no “I” on the floor).
- The delegates can use the first person plural ( We would like to begin by…) or the
third person (The delegation/ delegate of X would like to state that…) instead.
- The official language of the conference is English. All delegates are expected to
speak in English at all times during the debate (even in the unmoderated caucus).

When speaking in the GSL:

● “Thank you for the recognition, honourable chairpersons, fellow delegates and
lovely members of the staff and press”(if there are members of the staff/press in
the room)+ “esteemed members of the secretariat” when members of the
secretariat are in the room (the chairs will announce them when coming in)
Keep in mind that you do not need to address the house when in a
moderated/unmoderated caucus!

When finishing a speech in the GSL:

● -"We yield our time back to the chairpersons/the floor"
● -"We yield our time to points of information" (questions)
● -"We yield our time to the delegate of [another country]" keep in mind the
mentioned delegate has to agree to the yield, otherwise you will be invited to yield
the time back to the chairs.

When being asked a POI:

● "The point is well taken" [proceeds to answer]
● "The point is not well taken, may the delegate please rephrase" after the point is
rephrased you will be asked again if the point is well taken.

● moderated caucus, on the topic of […], total duration of [...] minutes, individual
speaker's time of [...] (please make sure that the total duration splits evenly to the
individual speaker's time).
● unmoderated caucus with the duration of [...] minutes, on the topic of [...]" .
● keep in mind that if the moderated caucus that you proposed passes, you will be
asked if you wish to be the first or last speaker.
When stating a point
● “Point of personal privilege, may this delegate be excused?” if/when you want to
leave the room.
● “Point of parliamentary inquiry,...” for when you want to ask a question about the
procedure of the committee.
● "Point/Right of Reply…" when or if you believe another delegation has deeply
offended your country. If it passes at the discretion of the chairs, the accused
