Requirement from Students

The students are required to adhere to the following guidelines and provide the deliverable(s).

 This CEP is a group task. Students are required to formulate the group consisting of 4 members and share your groups
to Class representative (CR).
 Demonstrate positive individual work while performing CEP as well as follow the given instructions and deadlines.
 Each group has to submit a report that covers:
o Introduction to the model and its parts/ Literature review
o Governing Equations and mathematical modeling for using Numerical approach
o Detailed Procedure of what and how you did this task
o Analyze the chosen heat exchanger for the given problem and comment on its advantages, limitations and
working requirements.
o Create/ design the model

 Students are required to read the problem statement carefully, understand and do what is required.
Problem Statement

A concentric tube heat exchanger is used to cool the lubricating oil for a large industrial gas turbine engine. The flow rate of
cooling water through the inner tube (Di = 25 mm) is 0.2 kg/s, while the flow rate of oil through the outer annulus (Do = 45
mm) is 0.1 kg/s. The oil and water enter at temperatures of 100 and 30ºC, respectively. How long must the tube be made if the
outlet temperature of the oil is to be 60ºC? The concentric tube heat exchanger is replaced with a compact, plate-type heat
exchanger that consists of a stack of thin metal sheets, separated by N gaps of width a. The oil and water flows are subdivided
into N/2 individual flow streams, with the oil and water moving in opposite directions within alternating gaps. It is desirable
for the stack to be of a cubical geometry, with a characteristic exterior dimension L. Determine the exterior dimensions of the
heat exchanger as a function of the number of gaps if the flow rates, inlet temperatures, and desired oil outlet temperature are
the same. Compare the pressure drops of the water and oil streams within the plate-type heat exchanger to the pressure drops
of the flow streams in concentric tube heat exchangers, if 60 gaps are specified. Consider (a) parallel flow (b) counter flow,
conditions for both concentric and plate type heat exchangers. Make an excel program to find the impact of tube diameters and
sheets gap width on the characteristics of the heat exchangers considering the material for the tubes and sheets first copper and
then stainless steel by assuming an optimum thickness for both tubes and plates.

For this CEP each group must answer the following questions while performing simulation for the given heat exchangers.
o Understand and explain the basics terminologies of heat exchanger and also the methodology that you
adapted for your solution.
o Apply the boundary conditions and also mention governing equations that you have used.
o Analyze all the obtained data through different flow types, tube diameter, sheets gap width and materials
used.
o Design both the heat exchangers through given parameters.

Assessment Criteria
The assessment of the OEL will be according to the rubrics defined, particularly for this CEP. There are four CLOs mapped
with this CEP, therefore, marks distribution as under will be followed,

CLO-1 30%

CLO-2 30%

CLO-3 40%
