SUBJECT: Class II Hang on Sideshift Carriage

This bulletin pertains to lift trucks with hang on sideshift carriages up to 5,500 pound capacity at a 24
inch load center. If a loose Side Shifter carriage is suspected, use these instructions to determine your
course of action.
It has been determined that some sideshift carriages may have had excessive vertical clearance between
the sideshift assembly and the base carriage. This may result in the top bearing strip being extruded
and/or cause the weld tab on the cylinder plate to fracture. This could cause the sideshift carriage apron
to separate from the base carriage. This bulletin is being issued to provide instructions on:
• How to determine if the upper and lower aprons on the sideshift can continue to be used or if they
should be replaced.
• How to repair the Sideshift assembly using one of two options depending on whether the parts are
reused or replaced. How to shim the Sideshift assembly.

Determination of Suitability of Upper and Lower Apron

As depicted in Figure 1, measure the distance between the bottom of the hook on the top apron and the
machined surface on the hook of the bottom apron. Dimension “D” should measure no more than
409.5mm (16-1/8 inch). If Dimension “D” is more than 409.5mm (16-1/8 inch), proceed to Option 1 -
Replacing the Top and Bottom Aprons. If Dimension “D” less than 409.5mm (16-1/8 inch), proceed
to Option 2 – Alteration of Existing Lower Apron to Accept Shims.

We reserve the right to make changes in design or add improvements without incurring the obligation to make such changes in equipment
previously manufactured.

Option 2 - Alteration of Existing Lower Apron to Accept Shims

Fabricate two shim stops as shown in Figure 2 using 10 or 12 GA sheet metal.

Figure 2. Shim Stop - Dimensions in Millimeters

Tack weld the shim stops in the trough of the lower apron as shown in Figure 3. Locate the open end of
the shim stop toward the center of the apron. (If this is not feasible, replace the lower apron with a new
lower apron (per Chart 2 below ) which is “shim-ready”.

Shimming Procedure
Preparation and Initial Assembly.

1. Install the top bearing strip per Option 1 or Option 2 between the locating tabs on the cylinder
mounting plate.
2. Position the top apron over the top bearing strip.
3. Install the lower bearing strip in the lower apron without shims.
4. With the lower apron on edge on the floor, lower the carriage so that slots in lower apron align with
bottom holes of the top apron.
5. Install the lower M20 x 2.5 x 40 capscrews through the slotted holes of the lower apron and into the
lower holes of the top apron. Tighten these capscrews finger tight, then loosen ½ turn.
6. Raise the assembly to a working (waist or shoulder) height. Caution: Be sure to have safety chain
attached to top apron lifting eye and the top mast crossmember.

Initial Shimming Procedure

1. With the lower bearing strip installed, without shims (as noted above), take notice of the clearance
between the rear lip of the lower bearing strip and the lower lip of the standard carriage bar when the
lower apron is brought into position.
2. Install the shim strips under the lower bearing strip (be sure the shims are seated between the shim
stops) so that the lower bearing strip will just clear the lower lip of the standard carriage bar when the
lower apron is brought into position.
3. Raise the lower apron weldment and install the top apron mounting bolts. Tighten bolts to 320 ft-lbs.
Note - if it is not possible to install the top bolts, remove one shim strip from the lower bearing strip.

Lower Bearing Strip Re-shimming Criteria

1. Place a block of wood approximately 6 inches high in the center and under the lower hook of the
side-shift carriage.
2. Lower the side-shift carriage until the lower hook just contacts the block of wood.
3. Lower the standard carriage until all it’s weight is also resting on the block of wood. During this
process, note the vertical movement of the standard carriage relative to the side-shift carriage.
4. If the movement noted above exceeds 1/8 inch (3 mm), re-shim the lower bearing per the
instructions above. Note - At no point should more than 6 shim strips be placed under the lower
bearing strip. If more than 6 shim strips are required, the top apron and/or the lower bearing strips
should be replaced.

PARTS STOCK: Although there is not a part number change for the top or bottom aprons there is a top
bearing part number and cylinder mounting plate change for pre and post shimming arrangements. Be
sure to order the original part number bearing for the original arrangement (i.e. no shims in lower apron
and the top apron has not been replaced) and the new bearing part number and cylinder mounting plate
for the new arrangement.

EFFECTIVE S/N: Not reported.

Warranty: Warranty reimbursement will not be considered unless a problem was

encountered during the warranty period.

If the SideShifter was produced during the period May 1998 through September1998, and if
the aprons are determined to be manufactured incorrectly, warranty reimbursement will be
considered.
