TEXTBOOK NOTES – IMPLICIT DIFFERENTIATION & RELATED RATES

IMPLICIT DIFFERENTIATION

• Implicitly Defined Functions: A dependent variable 𝑦𝑦 may be defined as a function of an independent

variable 𝑥𝑥 either explicitly or implicitly. Give 3 examples of each case.
Examples of Explicitly Defined Functions Examples of Implicitly Defined Functions

y=5x-1 x+y=7

y = 2x^2 - 3x + 100 e^y = 2x + 5

y=7e^x y = y^3 + x

• Implicit Differentiation: Write out the steps listed in the text for finding by implicit differentiation.
𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑

Step 1 Apply the chain rule while differentiating both sides of the equation with
respect to x, keeping in mind that y is a function of x.

Step 2 Determine the value of dy/dx by solving the resulting equation.

RELATED RATES

• Related Rates Applications: Write out the steps listed in the text for solving related rates problems.

Step 1 Develop or obtain an equation that establishes a relationship between

the two relevant variables, which may involve removing any extraneous
variables by utilizing information provided in the problem that remains
consistent throughout.

Step 2 Apply the chain rule to differentiate both sides of the equation from Step
1 with respect to time, considering that each variable is a function of
time.

Insert the given values that are applicable at the specific time of interest
Step 3 and then calculate the desired rate of change by solving for it.
