6.3. PCB Transport System

6.3.1. Configuration
A PCB conveyor system transfers PCBs transferred from the previous machine,
determines the position for part placement and secures PCBs. Since SM471 model has two
work conveyor lanes, when placing parts on a small PCB, it can load two PCBs at the front
and rear work zone simultaneously for part placement.
SM471 model features that it consists of two trains and three stages of: 1) Entry Shuttle
Conveyor (St00) that transports and distributes the PCBs transferred from the previous
machine to the front and rear work conveyor lanes; 2) Work Conveyor that secures a PCB
for part placement; and 3) Exit Shuttle Conveyor (St02) that collects part placed PCBs
from two lanes, so that it can minimize the PCB replacing time. In addition, it improves
the PCB flatness by securing a PCB at the bottom.

6-2

Figure6.3 The PCB conveyor system configuration is shown below.

6.3.2. Functions
Functions for each element are as follows.
 Conveyor Module
It becomes the base for the Entry Shuttle Conveyor Frame, Work Conveyor Frame,
Exit Shuttle Conveyor Frame PCB flow and various parts are attached for each unit.

6-3
Samsung Component Placer SM471 Introduction

Figure6.4 PCB Conveyor Module

 PCB detect Sensor Assembly

It plays a role to check the existence of the PCB at each section on the conveyor.
There are sensors to detect the PCB In and PCB Out for each of Entry Shuttle, Front
Work, Rear Work and Exit Shuttle, thereby monitoring stable PCB flow.
 Belt Assembly
It consists of step motor and flat belt and is driven with the PCB transfer belts being
divided separately for each unit. The PCB can be clamped at the working area by
using a belt.
 Conveyor width adjustment part
Adjusts the width of rails according to the size of PCB. It is composed of LM guide,
Ball screw, Motor, Zone sensor.

Caution Adjusting the conveyor width without checking conveyor

obstruction or the existence of foreign substance could
damage the conveyor.
Be sure to check conveyor obstruction and the existence of
foreign substance before adjusting the conveyor width.

 Shuttle Assembly
There is an entry shuttle and an exit shuttle. The entry shuttle distributes PCBs to two
work conveyors while the exit shuttle, which consists of LM guide ball screw, motor,
position detection sensor, etc., moves back and forth to collect the PCBs in order

6-4

from the two work conveyors.

 PCB Stopper
It stops a PCB on the work position and if there is a PCB to be moved to the next area,
it holds the PCB until the PCB is discharged.
 Edge Fixer
This is one way of correcting the position of a PCB prior to the beginning of work
after the PCB has reached the working position. The correction is made in reference
to one side of the PCB by pushing into that edge.
 PCB Clamp
Holds a PCB that is in contact with the belt prior to the beginning of work after the
PCB has reached the working position. It is operated while interlocked with a backup
table.
 Backup Pin
Placement is performed by the up/down movement (Z-axis) and rotating (?-axis)
movement. This is a pin supporting the lower part of the PCB in order to prevent
downward shock to the PCB in the Z-axis, and improve flatness through accurate
placement. The backup pin on the backup table supports the PCB board.
 Backup Table (BUT)
This installs a back-up pin for maintaining the evenness of a PCB, and drives the
PCB clamp, prior to the beginning of work after the PCB has reached the working
position.

Caution Be sure to remove any foreign substance on the BUT and

obstruction before manipulating the BUT.
Otherwise, the conveyor might be damaged.

6.4. Detection of Improper Component Pickups

A vacuum sensor that can detect improper adsorption of components due to fluctuations in
the vacuum pressure during adsorption is provided. A default vacuum pressure values
during pick-up is set for each nozzle, Furthermore, setup of appropriate vacuum pressure
for pickup of each nozzle is possible for successful pickup.

6.5. PCB Coordinate Correction Function (Fiducial Mark Recognition)

This function is for compensating the placement location based on the recognized position
of the ‘Fiducial Mark’ after recognizing the ‘Fiducial Mark’ indicated in the PCB by the
supplied ‘Moving Camera’.
There are two methods of correction: one is a global correction, the other is a local
correction.
 Global correction
Compensates each position based on one or two points in the PCB. In case of Array
PCB, compensation to each small PCB in the array PCB is possible. (Among the setup
item of the board definition, used for setup of the ‘Fiducial Mark’.)
 Local correction
Compensation of placement position for relevant part is possible by recognizing the
‘Fiducial Mark’ indicated on the major part in the PCB. (Used for setup of ‘Fiducial
Mark’ for compensation of placement position in the step program.)

Memo The correction of fiducial mark recognition coordinate is possible

only if a mark that can serve as a reference on the PCB exists.
Performing a local correction of each component after a global
correction of each PCB allows high-precision placement of the
component by ensuring more reliable correction of the component
position.
Fiducial mark recognition is rather limited for this machine. please
contact our Business Department or the local agent.

6.5.1.2. Size and allowable tolerance of fiducial mark

The outer size of each fiducial mark is 0.5 mm - 4.0 mm, and the allowable tolerance
should be within 10%.

6.5.1.3. Clearance Area

Each fiducial mark should have a square clearance area, around which there is no other
marks such as a conductor patterns, remaining leads, markings, etc. The square clearance
area should secure at least 0.5mm from the outer edge of the circumference of the mark. In
other words, there should be no mark within 0.5mm from the boundary of the fiducial
mark.

6-7
Samsung Component Placer SM471 Introduction

6.5.1.4. Basic materials and surface treatment of marks:

All recognition marks should be coated with non-surface-treated copper clad or one of the
following materials.
 Transparent non-oxidizing coating.
 Nickel coating
 Tin coating
 Lead plating
 Gold plating
 Hot-wing reflower solder coating
 Flux coating

Warning Pressing the Start switch without checking the presence of

worker nearby could cause injury.Be sure to check if there
is any worker near the machine before pressing the Start
switch.

Memo The surface of a fiducial mark should appear in complete contrast to

printed circuit part so that it is clearly distinguishable from the
circuits that are already printed. It should always be clean without dirt
or contamination.

6-8
Module Function

6.5.1.5. Evenness of fiducial marks

The surface of a fiducial mark should be even and smooth. Unevenness of the surface
should be within 0.02mm, and a material covering the surface of a fiducial mark should
also be even and smooth (That is, the protruding portion from the fiducial mark surface
should be within 0.02mm.).

6.5.1.6. Bad-Marks
If you don't want a component to be placed on a PCB, indicate the bad-mark on the PCB
(The position of bad-mark should be consistent).
It should appear in complete contrast to the background color of PCB, and have a diameter
of more than 2.5mm.

6.6. Flying Vision

6.6.1. Overview
‘Flying Vision System’ is a system recognizing parts with vision while moving the 6 head
pickup position to the placement position with 10 heads. 5 CCD cameras attached on the
head recognize components on 10 heads simultaneously. 2 types of multiple step digital
lights can be selected for each head.

Figure6.6 Samsung Flying Vision

1: Fly Camera
2: Illumination
3: Mirror

6.6.2. Lighting Path Control

The flying vision system uses a mirror on the light path so that the horizontally positioned
camera can recognize a vertically positioned component.
During the component pick-up, the mirror attached on the head rotates and moves to the
front of the head. When the component is on the move to the placement position after it
has been picked up, the mirror rotates and moves to the bottom of the head, and the image
of the component is formed through the mirror on the CCD camera attached on the head.
The image is vision treated and the position and angle of the component is recognized. By
using the recognized position and angle of the component, the coordinates of placement
position are adjusted. When the component is placed on the adjusted position, the mirror
rotates and moves to the front of the head again.

6.6.3.1. Coaxial Lighting

Coaxial lighting illuminates whole area of a part. It is used for most of parts and can be
adjusted in 0~15 steps.

6.6.3.2. Side Lighting

The side light is a light illuminating from the side of the component. This light is installed
on a lighting system that moves to the Z axis. When it is not in use, it stays up, and when a
component is recognized, the device comes down and illuminates the component. This
light is used to illuminate the ball during BGA component recognition, and it is also used
to emphasize the outline of Chip and IC components. It is possible to control steps
between 0 - 15.

6.6.3.3. Outer Lighting

The outer light is a light illuminating obliquely from the front of the component. It is used
for most components and it is possible to control steps between 0-15.

 As the nozzle of ANC can be change easily at any position, it is possible to either
increase pickups rate or to shorten the placement time by reducing the frequency of the
nozzle switching.
 When placing the calibration tool on the calibration tool pickup section, the vacuum
generation cylinder for the calibration tool generates a vacuum to secure the
calibration tool at that position.

Warning Operating the shutter while a finger is inserted in the ANC

could result in severe injury. Do not insert a finger into the

manually and then align the conveyor while pushing the PCB as shown in the
following figure.

2. After moving the new machine near to the existing one, lower the foot of the machine
so that it is aligned level with the existing machine. Then adjust the level keeping the
level difference below 0.05mm/m. (Any slight difference in level can be felt using a
finger tip.)
3. Using a lever, move the machine to the position where the gap between the existing
machine and the edge of the conveyor can be kept between 3~5mm.
4. Perform the procedure of leveling the machine again. (Refer to “7.1.3.2 Installation
procedure For Stand Alone”.)
5. Put the PCBs on each conveyor of the two machines, and set the machines so that the
level difference is 0.05~0.50mm, enough to allow the PCBs to move downward.
Essentially, the slope of the conveyor shall be set to allow for the “Down flow” of the
PCB in the direction in which the PCB is moving.
6. To ensure the straight movement of the PCB between machines, the machines must be
installed correctly so that there will be no unparallel gap at either front or rear side of
the PCB, when the PCB is tightly contacted to the reference line.

7-15
Samsung Component Placer SM471 Introduction

7. The PCB must pass smoothly without being blocked when it is pushed through the
machines by hand at low speed.
8. In the case of level adjustment between two machines, if the leveling of the post-
process machine was finished but the level does not match with the conveyor of the
pre-process machine, perform as follows.
The level of the reference surface must be identical in the left and right side direction
of the PCB (PCB flow direction), and the level difference must be less than 0.1 mm/m
in the front and rear side direction of the PCB. The PCB must pass smoothly without
being blocked when it is pushed through the machines by hand at low speed.
9. For the next procedure, refer to “7.1.3.2 Installation procedure For Stand Alone”.
