INSTRUCTION TO STUDENTS
ADVICE TO STUDENTS
Full marks are not necessarily awarded for a correct answer with no working. Answers must be
supported by working and/or explanations.
Where an answer is incorrect, some marks may be given for a correct method, provided this is
shown by written working. All students should therefore be advised to show their working.
A maximum of 2 marks will be deducted throughout the whole paper for poor presentation of
answers and for missing units.

9. In a quiz between Suukyi and Newton House, each team would get 5 marks for a correct answer
and lose 2 marks for a wrong answer or no response. (5 marks)
(a) Suukyi House got 15 correct answers and 5 wrong answers. What was its score?
(b) Newton House also got 15 correct answers but its score was 8 marks less than
Suukyi House’s. How many wrong answers did Newton House get? Question Total
Solution:
(a) The score of Suukyi House = [5 × 15 + (–2) × 5] marks [1M]
= [75 + (–10)] marks
= 65 marks [1A]
The score of Suukyi House is 65 marks.
[u-1 if no unit]
(b) The score of Newton House = (65 – 8) marks = 57 marks [1A]
Number of wrong answers
= (57 – 5 × 15) ÷ (–2) [1M]
= (–18) ÷ (–2)
=9 [1A]
Newton House got 9 wrong answers.
[-1 if no statement]
