TERMS:

Postulates – statements which are accepted as true without proof.

Theorem – any statement that can be proved true.

Proof
- a sequence of true statements placed in logical order. two-column proof
- a type of direct proof which is commonly used to prove theorems

THEOREMS ON CONGRUENT ANGLES

Right Angles Theorem: Two right angles are congruent

. Vertical Angles Theorem: Vertical angles are congruent.
Equal Supplements Theorem: Two angles supplementary to the same angle are congruent.
Equal Complements Theorem: Two angles complementary to the same angle are congruent.
The Supplement Theorem: Two angles supplementary to two congruent angles are congruent.

The Complements Theorem: Two angles complementary to two congruent angles are
congruent. . Two angles congruent to two congruent angles are congruent.

POSTULATES .

● Postulate: The sum of two adjacent complementary angles is a right angle.

● . The Complement Postulate: Two adjacent angles whose sum is a right angle are
complementary.
● The Supplement Postulate: Two angles that form a linear pair are supplementary.

PRIMARY PARTS OF A TRIANGLE- The triangle consist of vertices, sides and angles.

Adjacent angles - Two Angles that share a common side and common vertex (corner point)
and don’t overlap

Remote Interior Angle - two angles inside the triangle that do not share a vertex with the
exterior angle.

The sum of the measurement of an exterior angle of a triangle is the sum of the measure of the
remote interior angles.

The acute angles of a right triangle are complementary.

The base angles of an Isosceles triangle are congruent.

Corresponding parts of triangles - Refers to parts that match between two congruent triangle.
This can be an angle or a line segment(sides).

NOTE - The order in which vertices match automatically determines the correspondence
between the sides and angles of the triangle

Congruent triangles - Two triangles with congruent angles and congruent sides

NOTE – Tick marks means that the parts of the triangle with the same marks are congruent

NOTE – Naming the triangle properly will be crucial to prove that the two triangles are
congruent.

The Included angle - is the angle between two sides of a triangle

Side Side Side (SSS) postulate - If three sides of one triangle are congruent to the three sides
of another triangle, then the two triangles are congruent.

Side Angle Side (SAS) postulate - If two sides and the included angle of one triangle are
congruent to two sides and the included angle of another triangle, then the two triangles are
congruent

Angle Side Angle (ASA) postulate - If two angles and the included side of one triangle are
congruent to two angles and the included sides of another triangle, then the two triangles are
congruent

Side Angle Angle (SAA) postulate : same with ASA - If two angles of a triangle and a side
opposite one of its angles are congruent to two angles and a side opposite one of its angles of
another triangle, then the two triangles are congruent

● ASA postulate – If two angles and the included side of one triangle are congruent to two
angles and the included side of another triangle, then the triangles are congruent

● AAS postulate – If two angles and the non Included side of the one triangle are
congruent to two angles and the non Included side of another triangle, then the triangle
are congruent.
PROVING TRIANGLE CONGRUENCE

Proving the Congruence of triangles

REMEMBER!

1. An angle bisector divides the angles into two congruent angles.

2. A midpoint of a line segment divides the segment into two congruent segments.
3. Perpendicular lines form right angles that are congruent.
4. Parallel lines give the following pairs of congruent angles: alternate-interior,
alternateexterior, and corresponding.
5. Same side interior angles and same side exterior angles formed by parallel lines cut by
transversal are supplementary.
6. Two angles are congruent if they are:

a) Right angles.
b) Vertical angles.
c) Supplementary to the same angle or to two congruent angles.
d) Complementary to the same angle or to two congruent angles.
e) Congruent to the same angle or to two congruent angles.

Note: Corresponding Parts of Congruent Triangles are Congruent (CPCTC)

Parallel-Alternate Interior Angle Postulate: Alternate Interior angles formed by parallel lines
cut by transversal are congruent
Definition of terms

Midpoint of a segment – is a point that divides a segment into two congruent segments
Congruent Segments – are 2 segments with = measurements.
Congruent Angles – are 2 angles with = measurements
Complementary Angles – are two angles whose sum is equal to 90˚
Supplementary Angles – are two angles whose sum is equal to 180˚
