ROAD MARKINGS

TLE REPORTING
SOLID WHITE LINE

• A solid white line is a type of road marking that is used to indicate a boundary or separation between lanes of
traffic that are moving in the same direction. It is a continuous line that is painted on the road surface, and it is
usually around 6 inches (15 cm) in width.

• This marks the edge of the roadway and separates the travel lane from the shoulder or other areas. It is illegal
to cross this line. When a solid white line is present, drivers should not cross the line except in certain
circumstances.
DASHED WHITE LINE

• A dashed white line is used to separate lanes of traffic that are moving in the same direction.

• Unlike a solid white line, a dashed white line allows drivers to cross the line to change lanes or
make a turn, if it is safe to do so.

• In some cases, a dashed white line may also be used to indicate a merge area, where two lanes of
traffic are merging into one.
SOLID YELLOW LINE

• A solid yellow line is used to indicate a no-passing zone, which means that drivers are not allowed to
pass other vehicles on the left-hand side of the road.

•This marks the center of the roadway and separates lanes of traffic moving in the same direction. You
cannot cross this line unless it is an emergency or you are turning left into a driveway or side road.

•When a solid yellow line is present, drivers should not cross the line to pass other vehicles, except in
certain specific circumstances, such as when directed to do so by a traffic officer.
DASHED YELLOW LINE

•A dashed yellow line on a roadway means that passing is allowed in that lane, but with caution. It
indicates that drivers can pass other vehicles on that section of the road, but only when it is safe to do so.

• Drivers should pay attention to oncoming traffic and ensure that they have enough space and time to
complete the pass before the dashed yellow line ends or changes to a solid yellow line.
DOUBLE SOLID
YELLOW LINE

• A double solid yellow line on a roadway means that passing is not allowed in either direction. It
indicates that it is not safe to pass other vehicles in either direction on that section of the road.

• Drivers should stay in their lane and not attempt to overtake other vehicles until the double solid yellow
line ends or changes to a different type of line indicating it is safe to pass. Crossing a double solid yellow
line is illegal and can result in fines or other penalties.
CROSSWALK MARKINGS

• A CROSSWALK MARKING IS A SERIES OF PAINTED LINES ON A ROADWAY, TYPICALLY

WHITE, THAT INDICATE A DESIGNATED PEDESTRIAN CROSSING AREA. CROSSWALK
MARKINGS ARE INTENDED TO IMPROVE SAFETY FOR PEDESTRIANS BY INDICATING
WHERE IT IS SAFE TO CROSS THE ROAD AND ALERTING DRIVERS TO THE PRESENCE
OF PEDESTRIANS.

• CROSSWALK MARKINGS CAN TAKE A VARIETY OF FORMS, INCLUDING PARALLEL LINES,
DIAGONAL LINES, OR A COMBINATION OF BOTH. SOME CROSSWALKS MAY ALSO HAVE
ADDITIONAL MARKINGS SUCH AS YIELD OR STOP LINES, PEDESTRIAN SYMBOLS, OR
OTHER INDICATORS TO HELP GUIDE BOTH PEDESTRIANS AND DRIVERS.
BICYCLE LANE MARKINGS

• Bicycle lane markings are a series of painted lines on a roadway that indicate a designated area for
bicycles to travel. Bicycle lanes are intended to provide a safe and dedicated space for cyclists to ride,
separate from motor vehicle traffic.

• Bicycle lane markings can vary in design, but typically consist of a white line or series of lines on the
roadway, often accompanied by a bicycle symbol. They may also include other symbols or text, such as
“Bike Lane” or “Share the Road”.

• These are solid white lines with a bicycle symbol painted in the lane to indicate a designated bicycle
lane. Motor vehicles should not drive or park in this lane.
SCHOOL ZONE MARKINGS

• School zone markings typically consist of signs that indicate the start and end of the school zone, as
well as pavement markings such as crosswalks, speed limit signs, and other indicators to alert drivers to
the presence of school children and to encourage safe driving behaviors.

• The purpose of school zone markings is to improve safety for children who are walking or bicycling to
school, as well as for drivers who are traveling through the area. By reducing speed limits and reminding
drivers to be cautious, school zone markings can help prevent accidents and protect vulnerable
pedestrians.
BUS LANE MARKINGS

• Bus lane markings are a series of painted lines on a roadway that indicate a designated lane reserved for
buses only. Bus lanes are intended to provide a clear and efficient route for buses to travel through
congested areas and improve public transportation.

• Bus lane markings typically consist of a solid white line or a dashed line with the words “Bus Only”
painted on the pavement. Bus lanes may also be accompanied by other signage or signals indicating when
the lane is in operation and who is permitted to use it.
PARKING MARKINGS

• Parking markings are a series of painted lines and symbols on a roadway or parking lot that indicate
designated areas for vehicles to park. Parking markings are intended to help guide drivers and promote
safe and efficient use of parking spaces.

• Parking markings can vary in design depending on the location and purpose of the parking area. They
may include a variety of symbols and lines, such as: •Single or double white lines indicating individual
parking spaces •Blue lines indicating handicapped parking spaces •Yellow lines indicating no parking
zones or areas where parking is prohibited
•Arrows indicating the direction of traffic flow or how to enter and exit the parking area
