“All seemed to breathe freedom and
peace, and to make one forget the
world and its sad turmoils.”

—Queen Victoria
Balmoral Castle is a large estate house
in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and a
residence of the British royal family.
The Balmoral Estate has been added to
by successive members of the royal
family, and now covers an area of
approximately 50,000 acres (20,000
hectares). It is a working estate,
including grouse moors, forestry and
farmland, as well as managed herds of
deer, Highland cattle, sheep and
ponies. The Great Tower is 30.48 m tall.
HISTORY
Balmoral was built by Sir William Drummond in 1390.
In 1852, after visiting Scotland and falling in love with the Highlands, Prince
Albert purchased Balmoral Castle for his wife, Queen Victoria, for a cost of
£32,000 which equates to £4.7 million today.
As parents of nine children, Victoria and Albert decided that the castle was
too small for their needs.
In 1848, John and William Smith were commissioned to design new offices,
cottages, and other ancillary buildings.
After Albert’s death, a large statue of him with a dog and a gun by
William Theed was inaugurated on 15 October 1867.
After Victoria's death on 22 January 1901, the royal family continued to use
Balmoral during annual autumn visits.

GARDENS
The north or lower flower garden was planted with roses and
bedding out plants. To the east of the Castle there is a very handsome fountain.
Several of the beds were filled with quartz and different coloured stones.

Roses predominate in the west garden with pinks, lavender, various alpines and
ferns bordering the sunken garden. One of the deer statues remains in this
garden. The 'very handsome granite stair' leads down the terraces to the north
garden.

The glasshouses are also used for fruit and vegetables, including Blueberries,
introduced by the Duke of Edinburgh about 15 years ago. The east section of the
garden is the kitchen garden which supplies vegetables for the Castle.
The Royal family says: Queen Elizabeth is happiest at the
sprawling estate, her primary summer residence.
