INFORMATION
SUBJECT: LM6000 High Pressure (HP) SPRINT® Water Flow Limit

BACKGROUND

There has been a confirmed high pressure compressor stage 6 blade fracture event due to excessive HP
SPRINT® water injection on a SPRINT® unit that has the capability to inject both low pressure and high
pressure SPRINT® water. SPRINT® water flow rates can be limited in PC Model units by installation of core
control software defined by “PC Software Block Change S5” (Service Bulletin 6000-IND-221). PD model units
can be limited on HP SPRINT® water flow by incorporation of “PD Software Block Change S4” defined by
Service Bulletin 6000-IND-217. On PC and PD Model units that have not implemented the referenced core
software, the second rung software may already limit HP SPRINT® flow or can be modified to limit HP
SPRINT® flow. Contact your Packager for details. Otherwise, the 8 gallon per minute (GPM) limit should be
controlled by the operator. The 8 GPM limit applies at T2 (gas turbine inlet temperature) equal to or less than
50oF (10oC).

RECOMMENDATION

High pressure SPRINT® water injection should not exceed 8 GPM of water at T2 equal to or less than 50oF
(10oC).

Make sure to maintain the proper calibration of the SPRINT® water flow meter.

SUMMARY

To limit the possibility of a high pressure compressor stage 6 blade event due to excessive HP SPRINT® water
flow injection operators should not exceed 8 GPM of HP SPRINT® water injection at T2 equal to or less than
50oF (10oC). Control changes can be introduced at the customer’s discretion; otherwise operators must limit
water injection to no more than 8 GPM.
