Socrative

Socrative is an online quiz digital tool that is similar to Kahoot but with more capabilities.
Socrative offers the assessment capabilities of multiple choice, true or false, and short response.
It has the ability to add time as a factor or remove it which makes it both appropriate as a game
and a more traditional assessment tool. Teachers can make quizzes, surveys, and exit slips and
the program can be integrated into Canvas for Howard County teachers so that assignments and
points can be transferred immediately and automatically. Socrative’s options allow for teachers
to assess different curriculum standards particularly in terms of writing. Socrative is engaging for
students and can be a strong tool to use in the realm of academia.

Thomas and Boysen Taxonomy

Thomas and Boysen taxonomy focus on the technological integration of the computer in lessons
transferring teaching methods into the digital age. Thomas and Boysen recognize that technology
is not only inevitable, but also beneficial to students’ learning experiences. In this recognition,
they created an integration model to help educators incorporate computers into education. This
integration model has five categories which are experiencing, informing, reinforcing, integrating,
and utilizing.

Socrative and the Thomas and Boysen Taxonomy

Experiencing
During this level of Thomas and Boysen Taxonomy, students use a program and have the
cognitive stage for future learning set. In Socrative, a game can be set up by the teacher where a
student is answering questions about grammatical concepts (i.e. subject-verb agreement) in order
to propel a rocket forward. A student may not quite understand subject-verb agreement at first,
but gradually he/she will recognize patterns after successful guesses.

Informing
During the informing level of Thomas and Boysen Taxonomy, students use a program to replace
a textbook or lecture as means of initial exposure. Unfortunately, Socrative does not offer any
authentic form of program instruction. Socrative is designed as an assessment tool and its
capabilities cater to that function. Socrative, however, would be great to compliment another
program. In my class, I use a program called No Red Ink which has a ton of resources used for
teaching grammatical concepts. If I were able to inform students using that application, I could
use Socrative to question their comprehension of the material.

Reinforcing
The reinforcing level of Thomas and Boysen Taxonomy revolves around students applying their
knowledge consistently in order to strengthen specific learning objectives. Socrative is a tool that
is perfect for drill and practice. While the quizzes and exit ticket capabilities on Socrative are
good for assessment, they can be ungraded, untimed practice as well. Continuing with the
subject-verb agreement concept, after students have been taught the lesson detailing the rules of
S-V agreement, they can repeatedly practice questions that reinforce the rules of grammar. They
can even be asked to provide their own sentences with errors and then fix them.
