pH Sensor Slope
• A theoretically perfect pH sensor will have a slope value of 59.16
mV/pH at 25°C
• Slope describes how much mV charge is equivalent to a single pH unit
(sensitivity)
• Example:
• In a 4 pH buffer solution, a perfect sensor would output a 177 mV
signal
(7-X) x 59.16 mV, where X = pH of solution
(7-4) x 59.16 mV = 177 mV

Emerson Confidential 19
Calibration Diagnostics - Slope
• pH slope can be seen as an indication of the health of the pH glass
• Slope naturally decreases as the sensor ages
• Slope decreases faster with exposure to elevated temperatures

The usual high slope limit is 62

mV/pH. This could indicate:
- Most likely an error was made
during calibration
- Calibration was rushed
Slope Indication - Temperature was not stable
- Buffer values are inaccurate
50 to 59.16 mV/pH Sensor is good and is still
usable
48 to 50 mV/pH Sensor is reaching end of life
and should be considered for The usual low slope limit is 47
mV/pH. This could indicate:
replacement - Sensor is worn out
< 48 mV/pH Sensor is worn out and should - Sensor has a high impedance
short
be replaced - Sensor is coated
- An error was made during
calibration

ORP

Why Measure ORP?
• ORP is best for determining the
endpoint in a reaction
• This graph shows that if ORP is
below zero then enough sulfite

Scale and Corrosion
Scale costs $$ in three major categories: Scale
Tube Scale in a Cooling
1) Decreased heat transfer Water Bundle

2) Decreased flow
3) Under deposit corrosion* Scale also decreases the
diameter of a tube impeding heat
Scale reduces the efficiency of heat exchangers transfer rates
including cooling and boiler heat exchangers Cold Side
• Scale is an insulator (think of it as a layer
of rock) Tube
• Scale decreases flow further decreasing Wall

• Scale attracts more scale

Poor pH Control Will Allow Corrosion
Basic Failures from Corrosion Pitting
• Localized corrosion (pitting) can rapidly
penetrate wall leading to a tube leak
• Uniform Corrosion reduces wall thickness to
the point where the tube can no longer hold
the pressure and the tube bursts Corrosion in a Tube

• Corrosion causes Permanent Damage to Area of

equipment that can will cause maintenance Uniform
and other costs Corrosion

Typical sources of corrosion

• Dissolved Oxygen makes water more
corrosive

Water
• Temperature – Water can become more Thin Walled Tube Failure

corrosive at high temperature

• Flow –Fast moving water is more corrosive
than slow moving water
• Under Deposit Corrosion from Scale
• Low pH Dissolves and Removes Metal from Waterwall Tube
Pipes
Emerson Confidential 45
Controlling scale
• Boiler scale has two sources…
– Precipitation of contaminants that have accumulated and
concentrated in the boiler.
• Calcium, magnesium, alkalinity, sulfate, silica, and iron
– Deposition of corrosion products formed in the condensate and

Measurements in Scrubbers
scrubbed • Scrubbers are used to remove
gas harmful or smelly gases from a
gas stream.
• A chemical reaction between the
objectionable gas and a scrubbing
scrubbing liquid removes the gas.
liquid • As the gas is scrubbed out, the
concentration of scrubbing liquid
decreases.
• Either pH or conductivity can be
gas to be
used to measure the
scrubbed

Oil and Gas Drilling
Sample conductivity trend
 Oil drillers use various fluids to lubricate the
drills and bring up rock to the surface
 Analyzing the fluids provides feedback on the
rock formation and can give advance notice
of when petroleum products will be
encountered.
 (See ADS 2900-11 for more details)
 Toroidal conductivity sensors (especially the
model 226) are ideal for this service because
they resist coating and plugging.

• The lighter ends of the crude tower yield product with some acid water

the time lag in the control system. (See ADS 2900-01 for more details)

pH in Pulp and Paper
Locations:
• Pulp stock lines (pH control reduces the variability in the paper product)
• Process water (pH control reduces corrosion in the process piping)
• Wastewater (pH control reduces environmental damage caused by
effluent from bleaching and pulping operations.

Sensors:
 The coating resistant model 396P, 396R recommended for
pulp
 Chlorine Dioxide applications should use the model 398
 PERpHX sensor is best for physical, temperature stress,
long life where maintenance is practiced.

 The retractable model 228 sensor is most common

 The ENDURANCE line can be used in the steam plant

Be a trusted advisor
• Your customers need you to recommend
improvements to their process
– You don’t need to be an expert on their process if you can ask
the right questions…
– but you will want to know more than they do about our
products!
• Sensor selection is the key!
– Nearly all sensors are compatible with all analyzers
– First… Select the best sensor for the customer’s process and
installation requirements
– Then… Select the instrument to be compatible with the
customer’s power, enclosure, area classification,
communication, and other needs.
