UNDERSTANDING
HONOR

Honor is at an all-time low; respecting

or revering someone seems outdated.
However, God calls us to walk in
Honor. When we read in scripture,
the first command in the bible calls us
to "Honour our Father and Mother
which is the first commandment with
promise.
UNDERSTANDING HONOR
What is Honor? There are several definitions, but the main
way we define Honor is to regard someone with great respect.
When we honor someone, we admire, appreciate, and value
those around us. We must have Honor in our hearts, which
means it is internal and organic. When it's organic, it will flow
from our Honor, obedience, and adherence to God's word,
which helps to honor those around us.

A heart of Honor causes us to have integrity, uprightness, and

morality. Honor also causes us to have virtue and nobility for
God, ourselves, and others. God knows and sees our HEARTS,
so he told the Prophet Isaiah, "We honor him with our lips, but
our heart is far from him." Matthew 15:18
A pure and clean heart of Honor leads to proper reverence and
submission to God.

Honor also means to demonstrate high respect or great

esteem for someone. When we honor someone else, we see
great value in them; this is important because many of us need
encouragement and someone who can speak positively into
our lives. When we demonstrate Honor for someone else, we
place others above ourselves. Putting others above ourselves is
uncommon in our society because the advancement of self is
important. Self-advancement (selfishness) causes people to
become dishonorable.

Psalm 22:23 You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you descendants of
Jacob, honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!
CHAPTER
TWO
A CULTURE OF DISHONOR
In Genesis, Before the flood, amid an ungodly generation, we
read the story of Noah, who found favor in the eyes of God. He
was upright and blameless. In chapter nine, Noah was
cultivating the ground after the flood when his nakedness was
exposed. In this chapter, we read about someone with dishonor
and another with honor. Though Noah lay naked, the honorable
act is to cover him. Remember that love covers a multitude of
sins.

'And Noah began to cultivate the ground, and he planted a vineyard.

And he drank of the wine and became drunk, and he was uncovered and
lay naked in his tent. And Ham, the father of Canaan, glanced at and
saw the nakedness of his father and told his two brothers outside. So
Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it upon the shoulders of both,
and went backward and covered the nakedness of their father; and their
faces were backward, and they did not see their father's nakedness.'
Genesis 9:20-23 AMP
A CULTURE OF DISHONOR

Ham entered his father's tent and looked upon the

nakedness of his father. After looking at his nakedness, he
exposes his father's weakness/nakedness, which is a sign of
dishonor. A dishonoring spirit always exposes shame. It
seeks to bring disgrace, degradation, and humiliation. Shem
and Japheth acted honorably. They covered Noah's
nakedness and did not expose his shame. Dishonor always
seeks to bring shame and disgrace with the goal to cause
someone's purity and reputation to become defiled.

When Noah woke up, he realized what his younger son had
done to him. He pronounced a curse on Canaan and
pronounced a blessing on Shem. His children's honorable
and dishonorable acts caused a curse/blessing for his
grandchildren. Most times, when a parent is dishonorable,
their children will become dishonorable as well. I have
experienced this firsthand with my children. We must
understand the importance of Honor and how a dishonoring
spirit brings forth a curse.
A CULTURE OF DISHONOR
A curse of dishonor causes some to remain poor, frustrated, and outside
of receiving blessings and prosperity from God. When we encounter
someone dishonorable, they are often bitter and angry at authority.
Bitterness is rotten to our bones, both physically and spiritually. It is
commonplace in our society where children and adults are disrespectful
to their elders or those in authority over them.

Maybe they encountered trauma in their lives which has caused a bitter
root judgment towards all authority; because of this bitterness, any
authority figure, whether in the home, school, church, or workplace, will
be disrespected. The person in bitterness or offense will seek to expose
and disgrace the authority figure in their lives. Instead of respecting and
honoring them.
Bitterness Defined: A deep-seated ill will (spite, grudge, the desire to see
another experience pain, injury, or distress)

Bitterroot judgments
Hebrews 12:15 'See to it that no one falls short of God's grace; that no root of
resentment springs up and causes trouble, and by it many be defiled.

Ephesians 4:31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor [perpetual
animosity, resentment, strife, fault-finding] and slander be put away from you,
along with every kind of malice [all spitefulness, verbal abuse, malevolence]. ‘
A CULTURE OF DISHONOR

Bitterroot judgments normally come in during childhood.

Whether we felt mistreated or our hope and expectations in
our mother, Father, or any authority figure caused
disappointment and bitterness at any time, we begin to see
all authority figures through this same lens, including God.

A root of bitterness comes from unforgiveness and can lead

to resentment that defiles others. Bitterroot judgments
come from failing to secure God's grace to forgive.

God commands us to honor our parents and value them as

precious because this is the first commandment with
promise. Also, when our relationship with our parents is
right, it will help our relationship with God and others. Our
parents have value, and we should honor and treat them as
such. Again, I'm speaking from a place where I can identify
with the hurt an authority figure has caused, but I'm also
speaking from the other side, where I have had to repent and
forgive those around me. In short, we must obey this
command over and above our emotions.
A CULTURE OF DISHONOR

The nuclear family is under attack; Satan has worked for

years to bring dysfunction into homes through fighting,
divorce, and much more. We can easily dishonor our Father
and mother when houses and families are attacked. For
some of us, we may have bitterness in our hearts toward our
grandparents; either way, it was the design of Satan to
attack the home and family unit. He knows living a Christian
life includes reconciliation with God the Father through his
son Jesus Christ.

If we have disdain, resentment, or distrust toward our

earthly Father, we unconsciously feel this way toward God.
We now see such a high rate of broken homes; our unseen
enemy Satan orchestrated an attack on the nuclear family.
The goal is to stop people from believing and trusting in God
as our Father.

We must deal with the Bitterroot judgments and resentment

that stop us from drawing near and honoring God as our
Father.
CHAPTER
THREE
HONORING GOD

'You shall fear [only] the L ord your God; and you shall
serve Him [with awe-filled reverence and profound
respect] and swear [oaths] by His name [alone]. '
Deuteronomy 6:13 AMP
HONORING GOD

'Therefore the L ord God of Israel declares, ‘I

did indeed say that your house and that of
[Aaron] your father would walk [in priestly
service] before Me forever.’ But now the
Lord declares, ‘Far be it from Me—for those
who honor Me I will honor, and those who
despise Me will be insignificant and
contemptible. ' 1 Samuel 2:30 AMP

God calls us to Honor him. When we

Honor God, we glorify him. Romans
12:1 tells us to Honor God with our
body, which is our reasonable and
intelligent service. When we Honor
God, we regard him with great respect.
The Hebrew word for Honor is kabad
(H3513), which means to be heavy or to
make weighty. When we honor God,
we exalt him above all. Hence the
scripture in Deuteronomy tells us to
serve God and reverence him.
As we learn more about GOD, we learn HONORING GOD
about his multifaceted nature and
wisdom. God is Holy, righteous, and most
importantly, he is our father. When we
honor God, it begins in our hearts. In
Romans 12:1, we are told to present our
bodies dedicating all of the members set
apart to God, which is our act of worship.
When we present our whole being to God,
we honor God with every part of our body.
Submitting our bodies as a living sacrifice
allows us to worship God in Spirit and
Truth. It also helps us understand what it
means to honor God with our life, mouths,
finances, relationships, and beyond. Our
bodies submitted to God is the ultimate act
of worship and honor.

Most importantly, Jesus tells us in John We Honor God

14:15 that if we love him, we will keep and
through our
obey his commandments. Obedience is
how we Honor God. Obedience John
14:15
CHAPTER FOUR
VALUING PEOPLE
'Show respect for all people [treat them honorably], love the
brotherhood [of believers], fear God, honor the king.
1 Peter 2:17

Valuing people is important; as the scripture mentions, we

respect and treat people honorably. We must take the time
to build meaningful relationships with people. When we
build relationships, it opens the door for evangelism
because we've added value to the lives of others. We cannot
lead people to Jesus Christ if we disrespect or devalue them.

As the scripture tells us in 1 Peter, we are to show respect for

all people while treating them honorably and fearing God.
So, if we have a foundation where we honor Jesus and
fear/revere God our father while loving the brethren in
Christ, we should reflect this nature towards all people.
Remember, it's organic.
CHAPTER FOUR
VALUING PEOPLE
'So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows. Matthew
10:31

We have value, and God wants us to know we are valuable. We

are fearfully and wonderfully made. None of us are living
without a purpose. Our lives have a purpose, which is valuable
in God's sight. Though we live in a selfish and narcissistic
society, God wants us to know and understand our self-worth.
When we know our self-worth, we will not settle for anything
less than what God is calling us to have. In short, when we
value ourselves, we understand our identity, which is rooted
and found in Christ.
We let go of any comparison; self hated, and anything that
will cause us to see ourselves as less, and more importantly,
we will begin to destroy the inferiority complex. Valuing
ourselves means we know we are important to God and that
our lives have meaning and worth. You are worthy! A precious
Jewel in God's eyes. You have value.
CHAPTER FIVE
YOUR OPEN DOORS

When we honor God, he

honors us, so doors will begin
to open in our lives. We will
have Favor with God and man
because of our obedience to
God.
Queen Esther went before the
King on behalf of her people.
As a result, she had Favor,
Honor, and the sight of the
King. Because of this, the
door was open for her to have
a banquet with the King and
save her people.
It is this type of Favor we will
need from God, and it comes
through the door of Honor.
Dishonor breeds contempt,
but Honor brings forth Favor.
YOUR OPEN DOORS

'‘I know your deeds. See, I have set before you an open door which no one is
able to shut, for you have a little power, and have kept My word, and have
not renounced or denied My name. ' Revelation 3:8

God can open doors that no human can open, and neither can they
shut the doors God has opened. Honor is important because our
obedience to God is the key to our open doors. Remember, when we
obey God, we will have a heart of honor; your honor will allow doors
to open in your life.

What seems impossible in the natural God has already ordained for
a time and season. Queen Esther was in the kingdom for a specific
time, and when the door of opportunity opened for her, she went
through it. Because of her obedience, God's people received
freedom and victory! Let us pray for a heart of obedience and a
nature of honor, and God will open every door of opportunity in our
lives. We must seize the opportunity.

'making the very most of your time [on earth, recognizing and taking
advantage of each opportunity and using it with wisdom and diligence],
because the days are [filled with] evil. Therefore do not be foolish and
thoughtless, but understand and firmly grasp what the will of the Lord is. '
Ephesians 5:16-17 AMP
