Look at this picture

Describe this picture through
your senses:
what you see, what you might
you hear, what you might smell
and feel;
include interesting words,
especially powerful verbs and
strong adjectives.
“Speech Marks”
“Where are my shoes?” Sara asked.
“They are in the shoe rack!” said the janitor.

We use speech marks to show that somebody is saying something.

Speech marks tell us exactly what they are saying.

For example,
“Where did you go?” asked my mother.
Sarah shouted, “Wait! I’m coming.”

There is an important comma (or other punctuation) that separates

the spoken words from who said it.
Let's look at Rules for Speech Marks
1. Identify who is speaking

2. Note what they are saying

3. Add the opening speech marks “

4. Write the conversation inside the speech marks

5. Add the correct end punctuation — ,.?!

6. Add the closing speech marks after the end punctuation ”

Let’s Practice
We use speech marks to show
conversations between people.

“Are cherry seeds lucky? asked Rakesh.

“Of course.” said Grandfather.
“Then I’ll keep it.” Rakesh smiled and asked
Grandfather, “What can I do with a seed?”
“Plant it.”
