Q & HSE BRIEFING

HULL DEPARTMENT
SEMBCORP MARINE ADMIRALTY YARD
BRIEFING No: 51/Dec/2017 Date: 21.12.2017 Time: 1312 Hrs
Targeted to: Supervisors & Workmen of Hull Department including Hull
Subcontractors

1. Incident onboard Vessel “Kaombo Sul” on 11/12/2017

Date: 11/12/2017 (Monday)
Time: 1945 HRS
Location: Main Deck iwo 4(P) and 5(P) Cargo Oil Tank
Name of Injured Person: Gaiyum Md Abdullah Al
LOS/Age: 1.5 Years / 26 Years Old
Yard No.: G2845195X
Nationality: Bangladeshi
Company: YHH Offshore Engineering Pte Ltd
Designation: Grinder

IP was a grinder tasked to take up CSA role on the Main Deck and he was instructed to check on an air
manifold by his Supervisor as the compressed air supplied to his colleague working in COT 4(P) was
weak. While doing so, his left hand and both legs were shot with pressurized water vapour and grit
mixture. He was later accompanied to “My Family Clinic” and was given treatment as well as a jab. He
was later issued 2 days MC (12/12/17-13/12/17). IP then visited another clinic, “West Point Surgery
Centre” on 14/12/17 and was given 4 days LD (14/12/17-17/12/17). IP subsequently went to “West
Point Surgery Centre” on 18/12/17 for bandage cleaning and awarded additional 2 days LD
(18/12/17-19/12/17). IP was then scheduled for another cleaning of wound on 20/12/17 and was
told to update the Department for any change in status.

All to take note:

 Always practise extreme cautious when dealing with pressurized air and at all times prepare
for the worst to happen.
2. Proper Wearing of N95 Respirators
N95 respirator is a respiratory protective device designed to achieve a very close facial fit and very
efficient filtration of airborne particles.

The ‘N95’ designation means that when subjected to careful testing, the respirator blocks at least 95%
of very small (0.3 micron) test particles. If properly fitted, the filtration capabilities of N95 respirators
exceed those of face masks. However, even a properly fitted N95 respirator does not completely
eliminate the risk of dust/fume inhalation.

• How to Properly Put on and Take off a Disposable Respirator?

Figure 2 - Checking of Seal

Figure 3 - Removal of Respirator

All to take note that the proper manner to put on the N95 respirator is to have it on before placing of
face towel over the mask as there will not be proper seal between the face and the mask if worn the
other way round. It is therefore essential that the site supervisors are aware of the right way to wear
the mask and inspect the workers from time to time.
