Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to
use this module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress
while allowing them to manage their own learning at home.
Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as
they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

As a learner, you must learn to become responsible of your own
learning. Take time to read, understand, and perform the different
activities in the module.
As you go through the different activities of this module be
reminded of the following:
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on
any part of the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in
answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer Let Us Try before moving on to the other
activities.
3. Read the instructions carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking
your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are
done.

Let Us Learn!
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here
to help you master the relationship of exterior and interior angles. The scope
of this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations.
The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The
lessons are also arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But
the order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the
textbook you are now using.

Lesson 1 – Exterior and Interior Angles

a convex polygon
a. Illustrates exterior and interior angles of a convex polygon;

b. Finds the sum of the exterior and interior angles of a convex

polygon;

c. Derives the relationship of exterior and interior angles of a convex

polygon;

d. Give the pattern in solving the sum of the interior angles of

polygons;

e. Finds the number of sides of a convex polygon given the sum of the
measure of the interior angle; and

f. Find the measure of an exterior angle of a convex polygon given the

measure of the other angle (M7GE-IIIf-1).

1
Let Us Study

As we have discussed in our previous topic, there are two types of

angle in a convex polygon: exterior and interior angles. An interior angle of a
polygon is an angle inside the polygon at one of its vertices and an exterior
angle of a polygon is an angle outside the polygon formed by one of its sides
and the extension of an adjacent side.

Let us discuss the interior and exterior angles of polygons.

Interior angles means inside angles.

Exterior angles means outside angles.

Consider the figure below;

C B

 A , B and C are interior angles of triangle ABC.

 To find the exterior angle, extend a side outside the polygon and then
rotate the arm to line up with the next side.

Interior angle Exterior angle

 The interior angles not adjacent to a given exterior angle are called
remote interior angles of the triangle.

B Exterior angle
C A 1

3
In the above figure, A , B , C are interior angles ; B and C
are remote interior angles ; and 1 is the exterior angle in the given
figure.

A is the adjacent angle of 1 form a linear pair. The sum of the

measures of the two angles - interior and exterior at any vertex is equal to
1800, thus ( A+ 1 = 1800).

Example: Find the measure of 1 if A = 450.

Solutions: A + 1 = 1800 Substitute angle A by 450

450 + 1 = 1800
-450 + 450 + 1 = -450 +1800
1 = 1350
Apply addition property of equality

Let us find the sum of the measures of the interior angles of the
polygon.

 What is the measure of the interior angles of the n-gon?

The sum of the measure of the interior angles of a polygon with n sides is
then equal to (n-2)1800 since the sum of the measures of the interior angles
of any triangle is 1800.

Note:
 The sum of the measures of the interior angles of an n-gon is,
S= (n-2)1800, where n is the number of sides.

Problem: What is the sum of the measures of the interior angles of a

dodecagon?

Solutions: Interior angles sum

S = (n-2)1800
Substitute n by 12 since
S = (12-2)1800 decagon has 12 sides

S = (10)1800
S = 18000

4
Let us find the sum of the measures of the interior angles of the
Triangle.

The given activity will prove that the sum of the measures of the
interior angles of any triangle is equal to 180 0.

Example: Find the value of m in the given triangle.

880

420
m

Solution: G + F + E = 1800 Substitute angle F & E

m + 880 + 420 = 1800 by the given value
m + 1300 = 1800
Apply addition
-1300 + m + 1300 = 1800 + (-1300)
property of equality
m = 500

Thus, G + F + E = 1800
500 + 880 + 420 = 1800
1800 = 1800

Let’s discuss the relationship between an exterior angle of a triangle

and its corresponding remote interior angles.

B Exterior angle
C A 1

Using the given figure, we have these equations:

1) A + C + B = 1800 (The sum of interior angles is 1800)
2) A + 1 = 1800 ( A and 1 form a linear pair)
3) Using equation 1 & 2,
A + C + B = A + 1 (Both equations have sum of 1800)
4) Therefore, C + B = 1 (Remove A in both sides of equation 3)

Thus, an exterior angle of a triangle is equal to the sum of the

measures of the remote interior angles.

5
Note: This sum of the remote angles is equal to the exterior angle is
only applicable in triangle.

1 A
60°
60°
30° C
60°
60°
B
60°
Example: Find the measurement of angle 1 using the two remote
angles.
Solution: ∠1 = ∠𝐵 + ∠𝐶
∠𝟏 = 𝟔𝟎° + 𝟑𝟎°
∠𝟏 = 𝟗𝟎°

Therefore the measurement of angle 1 is 90°.

Let us find the sum of the measurements of the interior angles of

Polygons.

 A Polygon is separated into triangles by drawing diagonal/s from one

vertex.

Consider the following figures:

The sum of interior angles of any triangle is 1800.

Observe the pattern in the table below:

Number Polygon Number of Sum of Interior
of Sides Triangles Angles

3 Triangle 1 1x1800 = 1800

4 Quadrilateral 2 2x1800 = 3600

5 Pentagon 3 3x1800 = 5400

6 Hexagon 4 4x1800 = 7200

6
Find the sum of the measures of the interior angles of an octagon.

Solution: Sum = Number of triangles (180°)

Sum = 6(180°)
Sum = 1080°

Therefore, the sum of the measures of the interior angle the octagon
have is 1080°

Note: It is the another way of solving the sum of the measures of the interior
angle.

Problem: Find the number of sides of the polygon if the sum of the
measures of the interior angles of a convex polygon is 18000.

Solutions: Interior angles sum

S = (n-2)1800 Substitute the sum by the given
18000 = 1800n -3600 value and apply distribution
360 +18000 = 1800n -3600 +3600
0 property
21600 1800 𝑛
= Apply addition property of equality
1800 1800
12 = n Apply division property of equality

Answer: The polygon has 12 sides.

Note:
 The sum of the exterior angles of any polygon is equal to 3600.
