 The project presented the overwhelming importance of soils due to its richness in the
microbial diversity, in the life and health of the forest ecosystem.
 The two major methods of studying microbial diversity are the biochemical method
which includes culturing, community physical profiling, etc., and the other is molecular
method.
 The study was an attempt to unravel the soil microbial diversity of the target ecosystem
by culture based methods that included isolation and biochemical characterization and
the diversity study by PCR-RFLP.
 Major focus was on nitrogen fixers that were screened using N-free media.
 Nitrogen fixing ability and other plant growth promotion ability of selected isolates was
determined.
