C An even positive integer

D A rational number other positive integers

Assignment

Q 1. If n is a positive integer, then is:

A An irrational number

B An odd positive integer

C An even positive integer

D A rational number other positive integers

Solution 1:

Let (a + x)n = Odd terms (A) + Even terms (B)

So (a - x)n = Odd terms (A) - Even terms (B)

∴ (a + x)n - (a - x)n

= (A + B) - (A - B) = 2B

So in case of

= 2[T2 + T4 + T6 + ……]

Here in , 2n - 1 is odd number. So there will be always √3 in

So will be always irrational number.

Assignment

Q 2. The coefficient of x7 in the expansion of (1 - x - x2 + x3)6 is

A -132

B -144

C 132

D 144
Solution 2:

Given (1 - x - x2 + x3)6

= [(1 - x) - x2 (1 - x)]6

= (1 - x)6 (1 - x2)6

= (1 + 6C1 (-x) + 6C2 (-x)2 + 6C3 (-x)3 + …….) x (1 + 6C1 (-x2) + 6C2(-x2)2 + 6C3 (-x2)3 + ……. )

∴ Coefficient of x7 = - 6C1 x - 6C3 + (-6C3) x 6C2 + (-6C5) x - 6C1

= 120 - 300 + 36 = -144

Q 3. The sum of the series 20C0 - 20C1 + 20C2 - 20C3 + ……. - …… + 20C10 is

A 0

B 20
C10

C -20C10

D ½ 20C10
Solution 3:

We know

20
C0 - 20C1 + 20C2 - 20C3 + ….. +20C10 - 20C11 + ……. +20C20= 0

⇒ (20C0 - 20C1 + 20C2 - 20C3 + ……. - 20C9) + 20C10 (-20C9 + 20C8 + ……. + 20C0)

(As 20C11 = 20C9)

⇒ (20C0 - 20C1 + 20C2 - 20C3 - 20C3 + ……. - 20C9) + 20C10 = 0

⇒ (20C0 - 20C1 + 20C2 - 20C3 + ……. - 20C9) = -½ 20C10

Adding 20C10 both sides,

⇒ 20C0 - 20C1 + 20C2 - 20C3 + ……. - 20C9 + 20C10 = -½ 20C10 20C0 + 20C10

⇒ (20C0 - 20C1 + 20C2 - 20C3 + ……. - 20C9 + 20C10 = ½ 20C10

Assignment

Q 10. If in the expansion of (1 + x)m(1 - x)n the coefficient of x is 3, then

A m - n =3

B m + n =3

C m - n =9

D mn + m + n =3
Assignment

Q 10. If in the expansion of (1 + x)m(1 - x)n the coefficient of x is 3, then

A m - n =3

B m + n =3

C m - n =9

D mn + m + n =3
Solution 10:

Given, (1 + x)m (1 - x)n

(1 + x)m (1 - x)n = (1 + mC1x + mC2x2 + ….. + mCmxn)

(1 - nC1x + nC2x2 + ….. + (-1)n nCnxn)

= 1 + (mC1 - nC1)x + (nC2 + mC2 - mC1 nC1)x2 + ……

Thus coefficient of x in expression will be mC1 - nC1

⇒ mC1 - nC1 = 3 ⇨ m - n = 3

Assignment

Q 11. The remainder left out when 82n - (62)2n + 1 is divided by 9 is:

A 2

B 7

C 8

D 0
Solution 11:

82n - (62)2n + 1

= (82)n - (62)2n + 1

= (1 + 63)n - (1 - 63)2n + 1

= (1 + n.63 + nC2 . 632 + ……. ) + (1 + 2n + 1 C1 . (-63) + 2n + 1C2 . (-63)2 + ……)

= 2 + 63[(n + nC2 + …..) + (-2n + 1C1 + 2n + 1C2 . 63 + …….)]

= 63 x [Some integral value ] + 2

= 63 x [Some integral value] + 2 by dividing with 9 we will get 2 as remainder

as 63 is multiple of 9. —-----
