Lesson Idea Name: Storyteller

Grade Level/Content Area: 3rd Grade Language Arts
Content Standard Addressed:
ELAGSE3RL2: Recount stories, including fables, folktales, and myths from diverse cultures;
determine the central message, lesson, or moral and explain how it is conveyed through key
details in the text.

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and be
Creative Communicator – 1.6.a. Students choose able to do by the end of this lesson:
the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting I would like my students to determine the
the desired objectives of their creation or lesson or moral in story such as in fables,
communication. folktales and myths and explain how that is
shown through the key details presented in the
text.
What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?
The student learning goal for this lesson idea is for students to be able to create a podcast telling
their own fable, folktale or myth story that has a central message that their classmates are able to
determine by including the key details that are presented in the fable they created within a group.
Selected Instructional Software Tool:
Spotify for Podcasters
Description of Software: Spotify for Podcasters is great instructional software tool that teachers
and students can use to create their own podcasts or audio recordings as a different approach to
teach students and a different way that students can express their learning. It is an easy tool that
everyone can use just press play and talk as you wish. The software tool allows you to add music
in the beginning, ending, and anywhere that you would like in your podcast. The software does
allow you to edit your recording as well, which allows students to have full control over how they
want to display their podcast recording.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:
☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☒ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast,
posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an
outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
The students are going to be working in groups of four to create their own fable, folktale, myth story
that has a clear lesson or central message in which they will record on the software Spotify for
Podcasters. The students are going to be sharing their story to the rest of the class and have their
peers figure out their central message by the key details that they have included in their story that
they have created. This tool is going to be introduce to the students by me reading to them an
example of a fable story and explaining the key details in the story that help to create the central
message it has. After that I will explain to the students the key elements that a fable has to have to
make it a fable and give more examples of stories like that in which I will then explain to them that
they will be creating one based on what they have learned about fables, myths, and folktales.
Students are going to be aware of their goals because I’m going to write it down on the board and
there is going to be a worksheet that has all the requirements that they need in order for it to be
fable in case students go back as a reference. Students are going to utilize this technology by
recording the story that they have created with their group, add music to the recording as they wish,
even add more sound effects if they would like, and it will help them to have a deeper
understanding of the characteristics of a fable. The tool is going to show a deeper understanding of
the topic. I will be there to guide students on their stories if they are stuck or are having trouble
figuring out if their story is a fable. I will be there to provide extra assistance with the software tool,
and I will be there to make sure students are there by the time they have to complete this activity.
The students are going to be receiving feedback by checking off the elements that are required
based on a rubric that I will be handing out to the students therefore they know what they must
have. I will conclude this lesson by giving students an overview about the lesson and having students
explain what they have learned about in the lesson. I will be playing the stories that the students
have create and their peers are going to be determining their central message in the story. If their
peers were able to determine their central message students would receive feedback that it was
something they were able to do and they will have some quick feedback on that while I do grade the
rest of it.
Managing student learning:
There is going to be shift in the behavior of the students where they from passive to active social learners
because students will be learning about fables, but students are going to be creating their own fable based on
elements that fable have that makes it a fable. Students are going to be working in groups of four which
means they have to work collaboratively with their peers to create their own fable story. Students are not just
simply memorizing the key elements of a fable they are putting it all together to create their own where the
central message is clear and having their peers figure out the central message. Students are going to have to
submit a plan before they get started on using Spotify for Podcasters software therefore it gives students a
game plan on what they are going to be creating. This will help students to focus on what they have before
they just go through without checking to make sure it is what they are required to do. There is going to be a
time limit. I will be giving them twenty minutes to complete this assignment and every about seven minutes
will stop to make sure students are aware of the time they have left to complete the activity. Students are
going to be working in groups of fours which helps them to ask their group members for help on the activity
or the tool they are going to be using rather going straight to me. I will using the ask 3 then me to give

students the opportunity to communicate with their peers on things they need help on because I know that
they can figure it out by asking a peer and if they cannot I’ll be there to help after they ask 3 of their peers.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,
or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
The activity that I planned for my students supports Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principle
Multiple Means of Action & Expression because students are going to be able to express their
learning in different ways. They are creating their own fable story and recording it for their peers to
listen to. They were given the opportunity to show how creative they were with the story they
created while understanding what a fable is based on the elements they added in their story. They
are able to express themselves through telling a story of their choice. This activity and tool Spotify
for Podcasters is going to enhance learning experiences for students in the classroom because they
creating something based on a topic, they have learned rather than just simply memorizing the
elements of fable, folktales, and myths. They are taking their knowledge to the next level of
understanding and being able to be creative, which is something that students love to do. This
lesson is supporting all students no matter what their needs are because they are recording their
work in a new different way, having a game plan to read what they are going to be saying for
students they prefer to have something to follow along, and the tool allows for students to
demonstrate their understanding in a different type of expression.
Reflection: I feel like this activity that I have created is going to make an impact on student learning
because students are going to be exposed to a different way to show their work and understanding
of a topic. Students are going to have many creative ideas about how to create work in a different
and they have knowledge on how to use this tool later on if they want to. The part of the lesson that
I look forward to implementing with my students I get to see what the unique stories that students
will create and see how their ideas flowed together to create their unique creation. I am excited to
see what students will come with when working in a group with different ideas.
