Introduction

This booklet is the service manual for the E3 Series Disklavier sold from 2009.
The E3 Series offers improved operation via its control unit’s simple panel design and
superior soft playback, which is made possible through feedback control for full key
stroke motion during playback in conjunction with the key sensors.

Basic operation is possible with the control panel, however the remote control should be
used for regular operation. The unit features an organic light emitting display that offers
large text display for enhanced visibility.

The unit also features 128 MB of built-in flash memory. A floppy disk drive, which was
standard on previous models, is sold separately (UD-FD01).A USB port allows use of
external memory such as USB flash memory, hard disk, etc., besides the optional floppy
disk drive.
An IDC function, which has been available since the introduction of the MK IV, allows
playback of Disklavier Radio, software updates, etc.

Since the focus of this manual is mainly on service information, please refer to the
Owner’s Manual, provided separately, for other information regarding subjects such as
handling, etc. Also, we have tried as much as possible to provide a common approach to
service and procedures however, for those sections in which information is insufficient,
please refer to past product manuals.

Control Unit, without top cover

The control unit manages all operations

including those operated by the remote
control.
Information is also provided in the display
according to the particular operation. The
control unit sends and receives record and
playback data with the CSP unit and
stores performance data in the internal
Flash memory (128MB).
The unit also controls the CD drive and

manages data from the IN/OUT terminals
of external memory devices (USB drive),
MIDI connections, LAN connections, and
computer connected to the device.

The control unit’s parts and their major

functions are listed below.

46
2. CSP(Central Signal Processor) Unit CSP unit, removed from key drive unit(GP)

The CSP Unit is located under the high

register side of the key drive unit and
transmits playback data from the control
unit to the drive unit. It also processes data
received via the sensor unit and then
transmits it as performance data to the
control unit. In other words, it functions as
a driver for the control unit and piano, and
a relay for the sensor unit.

The CSP unit’s parts and their major functions are listed below.
・CSP Sheet : Relays playback data
Control unit (MIDI)  Drive unit (PWM)
Relays record data
Sensor unit (detects and converts to AD data)  Control unit (MIDI)
Drive unit playback table management
Memory tables created with measurements from the service center
mode

3. Drive Unit
The drive unit consists of the key drive unit that drives the keyboard, and pedal drive
unit that drives the pedals (damper/shift). In regard to keyboard drive, feedback control
for both downward and upward key motion allows sequential control of the position
and time (speed) of the keys in conjunction with the key sensor, which is described later.
The pedal drive unit also has a sensor - 5section
- cover inside of the unit that manages
feedback control of the full pedal stroke just as
Key drive unit, without bottom cover(GP)
with the keyboard.

The key drive unit’s parts and function are

listed below.
・EKD1 Sheet : drives key number from 57 to 88
・EKD2 Sheet : drives key number from 47 to 56
・EKD3 Sheet : drives key number from 15 to 46
・EKD4 Sheet : drives key number from 1 to 14

57
Pedal drive unit, without cover(GP)

The CSP unit converts MIDI playback data from the

control unit to PWM data for the key drive (or pedal
drive) unit, and relays it on to the drive sheet in the
key drive unit. The FET drives the key solenoids.
(Also the pedal solenoids are driven by FET.) Two
temperature sensors for thermal protection are
installed on the pedal drive unit and one sensor is on
key drive unit, and activate when the unit reaches
120ºC (key drive unit : 100℃). Corresponding PWM
output to the pedal drive is stopped when excessive
temperature activates the sensor.
Turning the power OFF and letting the temperature decrease will restore operation.
Also, individual poly switches installed on the keyboard and pedal drive FET circuits
shut down the circuits when excessive current is detected. (The switch resets when
there is no power surge present.)

4. Sensor Unit
The sensor unit consists of the key and the hammer sensor (DGB1K has only key
sensor), which detects key and hammer movement during performance, and the pedal
sensor, which detects pedal movement (damper, shift, sostenuto).
Position of the key shutter and the sensor
4-1. The key sensor consists of the key sensor sheet, KEY OFF

optic fiber, light source/receiver. Key

movement causes the acrylic shutter attached
to the underside of each key to break the LED
light beam as it passes from the optic fiber to
the sensor head.
The key shutter is printed with a gradation,
which goes from solid (black) in - 6 its- upper KEY ON

portion to thin (transparent) in the lower, that

changes the amount of light received by the
optical sensor as keyboard movement causes
the shutter to break the beam of light. The
level of transparency decreases as the keys are
depressed.
This is how key movement is detected.
The key sensors also function with key feedback control during automatic playback.

68
4-2. Key Sensor Measurement
Measurements are taken to normalize the positions between the keys (key shutter)
and sensors, and detect values, which differ according to the light source/receiver
conditions of each sensor. The measured values are saved in the CSP unit.

The rest position and end position are measured with key sensor measurement.
The rest position : normal key position
The end position : fully depressed key position

Allocated into four stages.

• Normal position
Fully depressed position K1 : 2.7mm K2 : 4.5mm

K3 : 6.3mm K4 : 8.1mm

• After the key sensor value is measured, its rest position is re-measured and updated
while the power is on.

4-3. Pedal Sensor Unit

The pedal sensor is incorporated into the pedal drive Pedal sensor
sheet and consists of the light source/receiver element
photo interrupter and the pedal shutter attached to
the pedal rod. The method used for detecting pedal
movement is similar to the key sensor described
earlier. Pedal movement causes the shutter to move
up and down changing the amount of light detected
by the sensor as the pedal moves. The pedal sensor
manages the detection of pedal performance data
while recording and feedback control during
automatic playback.

4-4. Pedal Measurement

Pedal measurement in the Service Center mode, which is described later, measures
pedal drive and position detection (sensor), or what is termed the relationship
between force placed on the drive unit and the resulting pedal position. The
measured data is saved in the CSP unit and used for damper and soft pedal
operation.

79
4-5. Hammer Sensor Unit Upright Piano Hammer Sensor Unit

The hammer sensor consists of the hammer

sensor sheet, optic fiber, light source/receiver.
Hammer movement causes the metal shutter
attached to the hammer shank of each key to
break the LED light beam as it passes from the
optic fiber to the sensor head.

6. PS (Power) Unit
The power unit supplies each unit with its required power.
The power cord for the powered speaker can be connected to the AC outlet. On the E3
power unit, protection circuits operate and shut down the power when excessive
current is detected in the drive, however in the PS unit, which was described in drive
unit section, individual poly switches function when excessive current is detected so
electric current is not switched off.

4. Tips on Tuning and Regulating the Piano
Upright Piano
Before making adjustments inside of the piano, make sure that the control unit’s power is
switched OFF.

A. Removing exterior panels

1) Open the top board.
2) Remove the upper front board (there are no plates holding the upper front board
stopper in place).
3) Remove the fallboard.
4) Remove the key stop rail.
The piano can now be tuned in the same manner as a regular piano.

Lower front board spring

*When removing the lower front board, remove the

retaining screw from the lower front board spring
and then remove the board.

B. Cautions when regulating

An acrylic shutter is attached to the underside of each key.
When removing the keyboard, please take care not to damage the shutters.

The E3 uses key sensors to detect key position. For this reason the condition of key
regulation and the key stop rail will have an effect on key sensor detection.
Frequent occurrence of the following conditions may result in errors when the key
sensor is operating.
1. Tight balance rail holes will result in keys that are still raised when the keys are
operated with the automatic piano playback function.
2. The space between the key stop rail and the keyboard is too wide.

After making adjustments to the keyboard (height, depth), the service center mode is
required to perform calibrations.

14
12
C. E3 Pedal Adjustment
The E3 pedal unit is mechanically the same as that on the DU1A.
Procedures for adjusting it are the same as well.

In the Disklavier, the pedal drive unit and sensor are located in the center of the pedal
rod and a nut (B) on the topside of the drive unit is used to adjust the length of the rod.
The wing nut (A) on the pedal lever is used to adjust the bottom of the stroke of the
drive unit. The methods used for adjusting the damper pedal and the soft pedal are
different. Refer to illustration #1.

E3 Pedal Adjustment
The E3 pedal unit is the same as used on the MKIII.
Adjusting the unit is also the same. Pedal Adjustment

The difference between the system used on the E3

and that used on an ordinary acoustic piano is the
pedal rod on the pedal.
On an acoustic piano, the bottom of the pedal rod is
set on a rubber ring located on the back of the pedal
and the top is a double nut system with a hexagonal
cap nut.
The hexagonal cap nut located on the top is used to
adjust all changes in pedal conditions.
The Disklavier has a pedal drive unit and sensor
positioned midway in the pedal rod, and length
adjustment is done at two locations, one at the
double nut located on the underside of the drive
unit (A), and another with the hexagonal cap nut on
the topside (C).

Changes in pedal conditions result from changes in

the upper and lower portions of the pedal rod.
In the lower section, the load crushes the felt
cushion on the rear of the pedal box lowering the
rear end of the pedal.
In the upper section, changes occur when the pedal
lever skin under the key bottom and the felt on the
pedal rod become compressed.

On an acoustic piano, these changes can be compensated for through adjustments

with the hexagonal cap nut.
On the Disklavier, adjusting the lower portion of the pedal rod (B) consists of
loosening the lower double nut (A) to lengthen the pedal rod then checking the
space (L≒15mm) underneath the pedal drive unit to check the adjustment results.
This maintains the stroke of the pedal drive unit and properly positions the pedal
sensor.
Adjusting the upper portion of the pedal rod is the same as on an acoustic piano
using the hexagonal cap nut.

A.Adjusting the Key Sensor Unit

When shipped from the factory, the key sensor unit is adjusted to the following
positions and measurements.
Clearance does not require adjusting under normal circumstances. However, when the
unit is replaced, etc., the measurements should be adjusted to those given below.

Position: Clearance between the bottom of

the keyboard and the top of the key sensor
unit chassis when the black keys on each
section are depressed.

Basic dimensions :
*1
Clearance 3.8mm to 4.0mm (a).

Adjustment: Use the screws (1 each) on the

front and rear of the sensor unit brackets
(4 locations) to adjust (*①).

Align key sensors so that they are parallel to

the keyboard.

When the clearance between the key sensor and the keyboard is too wide
 the key shutter will not be able to break the light beam.

When the clearance between the key sensor and the keyboard is too narrow
 the keyboard will come in contact with the key sensor when played hard.

Sensor measurement with the service center mode is required not only when replacing
key sensor units, but also when carrying out keyboard height adjustments and other
keyboard related adjustments.

19
17
B. Adjusting the Hammer Sensor Unit
By using service center mode, hammer sensor test/adjustment can be done (refer page

When shipped from the factory, the key drive unit is adjusted to the following positions
and measurements.
Clearance does not require adjusting under normal circumstances. However, when the
unit is replaced, etc., the measurements should be adjusted to those given below.

Position: Use the three keys in the lower, upper, and

middle registers of the key drive unit to
check the clearance between the lower side
of the keyboard rear end and the plunger
head of the key drive unit.

Basic Measurement:
Clearance 0.5mm to 1.0mm (b).

Adjustment: Use the special spacers (*②) to increase
or decrease the lower and upper register of
the key drive unit.
Use the screw on the adjustment bracket to
adjust the middle register (*③).

In the field, use a wire to push the plunger

up from underneath the key drive unit.
You can feel for play when pushing up.

D. Adjusting the Pedal Drive Unit

The pedal drive unit’s position is also determined after carrying out the pedal calibration
in the previously described section.
*Calibration with the Service Center Mode is required after making any pedal
(soft/damper) related adjustments.

E. Adjusting the Hammer Shank Stopper Unit
Step 1. Check if the hammer shank stopper do not disturb the dampers or hammers
movement during normal playing.  OK Step 2

Hammer shank stopper height/lateral adjustment is necessary if any disturbing

happens.  Step 4

Step 2. Turn on the power then depress and lock the

center pedal to enter the quiet mode.
The hammer shank stopper moves 8mm
toward front.
Check if the acoustic sound doesn’t come out
during playing keyboard with Mezzo forte
level. If no sound comes, then the distance
between hammer head and strings will be
within 4.5mm-7mm when the hammer shank
touches the shank stopper cushion.  OK

Shank stopper must be adjusted to the front

if the acoustic sound comes.
If the balance of the same section is not even
(ex. Bass).  Step 3

Note: Hammer let off adjustment must be

1mm wider than the adjusted quiet
mode distance.

Hammer shank stopper

22
20
Step 3. The screws on each shank stopper
section give the fine hammer stop
positioning and eliminate uneven-
ness in the same section.

Step 4. Normally the shank stopper position is set correctly in the factory.
The height adjustment and lateral adjustment can be done as following drawings.
 OK Step 2.

Step 5. Motor drive (MD) unit for the quiet function is located on the right action bracket.

When the quiet function is turned ON and turned OFF, both the shank stopper
lever and the MD lever will stop by touching each stroke end.
If either of them doesn’t touch its end, there is stroke loss of shank stopper move.
It can be re-adjusted by using the adjust screw to get the maximum stroke
distance.
Check Step. 2 if the adjustment has been done.

When shipped from the factory, the key drive unit is adjusted to the following positions
and measurements.
Clearance does not require adjusting under normal circumstances. However, when the
unit is replaced, etc., the measurements should be adjusted to those given below.

Position: Use the three keys in the lower, upper, and middle registers of the key drive
unit to check the clearance between the lower side of the keyboard rear end and the
plunger head of the key drive unit.
Basic Measurement:
Clearance 0.5mm to 1.0mm (b).

Adjustment: Use the special spacers (※②) to

increase or decrease the lower and upper
register of the key drive unit.
Use the screw on the adjustment bracket to ※②
adjust the middle register (※③).

Checking: In the manufacturing stage, after

a special spacer (1mm) is placed underneath Hole
the plunger head, the action is installed, and
then checked to see how much hammers have
risen.
When the spacer is added but the hammer
does not rise
 clearance is more than 1mm.
If the hammer rises more than 5mm
 There is no clearance and they are in
contact.
In the field, a hole allows the plunger to be
pushed up from underneath the key drive ※③
using a wire, etc.
You can feel for play when pushing up.

D. Adjusting the Pedal Drive Unit
Adjusting the pedal drive unit is similar to pedal adjustment on an acoustic piano.
Review the method for adjusting the acoustic pedal.

Damper Pedal Adjustment:

Acoustic Section
Adjusting Play
The section of travel when the pedal is depressed, before the damper is actually raised.
Play should be one third of the pedal stroke.
To be more precise, adjust the clearance between the underside of the damper lever and
the lifting rail.
Adjust the clearance to approximately 2mm.
Adjust using the hexagonal cap nut on the pedal rod.
Adjusting the Stroke (amount the damper pedal raises)
Adjust the distance that the damper is raised from the strings when the pedal is fully
depressed.
The amount of stroke should be double the play.
The damper should raise approximately 4mm.
Use the capstan screw under the key bottom to adjust. L
Pedal Drive Unit Adjustment Section
Adjustments should be made before adjusting the A
acoustic piano. B
Adjust the clearance between the top of the
damper pedal solenoid and the chassis.
Clearance should be approximately 15.5mm (L). ※④
Loosen the double nut (A) on the bottom of the
pedal rod and rotate the pedal rod (B) to adjust the
length.
After adjustment is complete, tighten the double nut.
To confirm, the LED on the pedal sensor sheet
lights ( ※ ④ ) when the clearance between the
solenoid damper and chassis is 2 to 1.5mm(c).

Shift Pedal Adjustment c

Acoustic Section
Zero lost motion
Confirm by hand that the play between the soft casting and the keyboard rail is zero
when the pedal is depressed.
28
26
Use the hexagonal cap nut on the pedal rod to adjust.
Adjusting the Stroke (amount of shift)
The amount that the action shifts to the right when the pedal is fully depressed.
Check the position where the music wire and hammer are parallel (next higher pitch).
The amount of shift should position the hammer one string to the right leaving one
string to the left of the hammer open.
Use the adjustment screw located inside of the right key block. (Before adjusting, lift up
the capstan screw so that it is not in the way of the adjusting screw on the key block.)
Adjust so that both the capstan screw located under the key bottom and the key block
adjustment screw make contact simultaneously.

Pedal Drive Unit Adjustment Section

Same as for the damper pedal drive unit.

A history of error occurrences during operation and measurement can be checked in

the Service Center mode “1-7 Log view”.
Communication and operating conditions for individual units, which are checked on a
regular basis, can be copied with an external USB memory.
Refer to the Service Center Mode for more information.

4.Remedies for Other Problems

A) Power Supply Problems
1. The power does not switch ON.
• Check the AC outlet voltage.
• Check power cord connections.
• Check the main power on the PS unit.
2. Power is not supplied to a particular unit.
• Start the Service Center mode.
• Use Piano Information  1-1. System Connection to check communication and
power supply voltage between the units.

B) Playback Problems
1. No playback.
• Check communication between the units.
• Check power supply voltage for playback.
43
• Check individual unit temperatures.
2. One or more keys does not playback.
• When a poly switch, used to detect excessive current, engages, the corresponding
key(s) stops operating.
3. Playback volume differs between keys.
• The playback table is incompatible  Re-measure.
* Uneven key balance in the balance section, which is related to key regulation
and key rail adjustment, affects the measurement.

C) Recording Problems
1. Cannot record.
• Check communication between the units.
2. Some notes do not record.
• Carry out a sensor test with the Maintenance Mode.
• Check 12 light source groups  Light source system.
• Check 8 light receiver groups  Light receiver system.
• Check key shutters.
• Check sensor heads.
3. The volume differs between recording and playback.
• Strongest notes  Slight decrease in volume.
• Weakest notes  Slight increase in volume.
4. Timing differs when producing sound.
• Timing may vary in the weakest keystroke range.
