PART 3
I work as a regular office worker in Kuala Lumpur. My workplace is a long distance away
from my home. It’s about 80 kilometres away. I have to wake up before Subuh’s adhan, as
I’m always in a rush. There’s never enough time for a relaxed breakfast. Sometimes, I don’t
even get to grab breakfast! At exactly 7:00 AM, I get into my car and start the long drive.
I usually like driving on the highway more than in the city. During the morning rush hour,
though, it’s not very enjoyable. The heavy traffic is a little bit annoying. Plus, Kuala
Lumpur’s drivers are mostly rude and reckless. So, I always listen to my favourite morning
radio segment in the car. The JoHaRa Pagi ERA segment cheers me up a lot and distracts me
from my rude fellow drivers.
The drive to work usually takes about one hour. Going back home in the evening after work
takes even longer, maybe around 90 minutes. Lately, I’ve been thinking about trying to take
the train to work instead of driving. That way, I could still listen to my music with
headphones, and even read my favourite webnovel at the same time. Most importantly, there
is no traffic jam if I commute using train!

The Environment
There are many factors that place the well-being of the planet in jeopardy. While some
people have the opinion that environmental problems are just a natural occurrence, others
believe that human beings have a massive impact on the environment. Regardless of your
viewpoint, take into consideration the following factors that place our environment as well as
the planet Earth in danger.
Global warming or climate change is a major contributing factor to environmental damage.
Because of global warming, we have seen an increase in melting ice caps, a rise in sea levels,
and the formation of new weather patterns. These weather patterns have caused stronger
storms, droughts, and flooding in places that they formerly did not occur.
Air pollution is primarily caused as a result of excessive and unregulated emissions of carbon
dioxide into the air. Pollutants mostly emerge from the burning of fossil fuels in addition to
chemicals, toxic substances, and improper waste disposal. Air pollutants are absorbed into
the atmosphere, and they can cause smog, a combination of smoke and fog, in valleys as well
as produce acidic precipitation in areas far away from the pollution source.
In many areas, people and local governments do not sustainably use their natural resources.
Mining for natural gases, deforestation, and even improper use of water resources can have
tremendous effects on the environment. While these strategies often attempt to boost local
economies, their effects can lead to oil spills, interrupted animal habitats, and droughts.
Ultimately, the effects of the modern world on the environment can lead to many problems.
Human beings need to consider the repercussions of their actions, trying to reduce, reuse, and
recycle materials while establishing environmentally sustainable habits. If measures are not
taken to protect the environment, we can potentially witness the extinction of more
endangered species, worldwide pollution, and a completely uninhabitable planet.

A GATHERING TO REMEMBER
My English teacher had invited us, her students, to her house during the school holidays. It
was the first day of Eid, the day the Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadhan, the fasting
month. Shanti, Alya, Nancy and I were the first to arrive at our teacher’s house. Her younger
brother invited us in as Miss Nadia was in the kitchen. 35

He told us that they had just come back from the mosque. Nancy looked a bit puzzled, so
Alya explained that the Muslims, men and women alike always go to the mosque for a
special morning prayer on the first day of Eid. We could see Miss Nadia had already
prepared a vast variety of food which were spread out on a nearby table. Miss Nadia
eventually came to greet us when another group of classmates arrived.
36.
Everyone could not wait to indulge in the food, which to be honest, looked extremely
scrumptious. Apart from the usual Eid’s delicacies of ketupat, lemang and rendang, we also
had a choice of eating different assortments of noodles such as soup noodles, curry noodles
and ‘laksa’. We helped ourselves to the various food while enjoying the

festive songs played
most of us spent our break at home. Some of our Muslims classmates were not around
because they went to visit their grandparents and relatives in their hometowns. Miss Nadia
and her brother decided to stay home because both her parents decided to spend their Eid
overseas this year. Alya and I, on the other hand, had our grandparents living with us.

Later, we helped Miss Nadia to do the dishes and some tidying. It was a small

packet containing money and the tradition of giving money to children was similar to the
Chinese who gave angpow on Chinese New Year. Miss Nadia thanked us for coming but we
told her that we were very grateful to her for having us. It was noisy but a

really joyous occasion.
B Everybody wished her and our other Muslims friends with ‘Happy Eid Mubarak’.
F We enjoyed the great food and the camaraderie of our close friendship.
