DATE August 16, 2004
NEWS (C) Page 1 of 9

SUBJECT: BOOM AND ARM REINFORCEMENT

PURPOSE: To provide the necessary information for reinforcement of a standard boom and
arm where structural failure has occurs during normal use of the machine.
APPLICATION: PC300HD-7L Hydraulic Excavator Serial Number A85001 and UP
PC300LC-7L Hydraulic Excavator Serial Number A85001 and UP
PC300LL-7L Hydraulic Excavator Serial Number A85001 and UP
FAILURE CODE: 7110ZC
DESCRIPTION: The arm and boom reinforcement may require several parts to be fabricated. One
or more of the referenced reinforcement plates may be required depending on the
failure location. After fabrication the reinforcement plates will be welded to the
arm and boom. It may also be necessary to refer to the welding manual for
additional welding procedures not covered in this document. The final step will
include primer and finishing painting.

MACHINE PREPARATION

1. Park the machine on a flat level surface; lower the work equipment to the ground. Shut off the
engine and cycle the controls to remove any residual hydraulic pressure from the work equipment
circuits. Turn the parking brake switch on and block any tracks or wheels if necessary.
2. Remove the key from the ignition switch until the repairs are complete. Place a tag on the steering
controls advising: “This machine is being repaired. It should not be started or moved for any
reason until the tag is removed by the person doing the repairs.”
WARNING! Observe all safety and precautionary standards as dictated by the environment
and work conditions under which the equipment will be inspected, reworked and
repaired. consult the “Shop Manual” and “Operator's and Maintenance Manual”
and your “Komatsu district service manager” with any/all questions regarding
safety.

Remark
These instructions are intended to supplement the service data contained in the appropriate
“Shop Manual”. Always refer to that manual for Removal, Installation, Disassembly and
Reassembly instructions when not contained in this document.

WELDING INFORMATION

★ Permissible Welding Types

Use either gas wire feed or electrode type arc welding.

Weld Type Rod/Wire Material

JIS D4316 D4326

Electrodes
AWS E7016 E7028

JIS YGW-11
Wire Feed (Gas)
AWS ER70S-6

• Electrodes must be stored in sealed containers until needed utilize only new dry new hydrogen
welding rod.

★ Welding environment:

1. Air movement caused by wind or high speed drafts must be avoided.

2. Welding should not be done with air temperatures below 10oC (50oF).
3. Provisions should be made to protect the weld from cooling to fast.
4. All moisture on steel surfaces should be removed before making any welds to them.
5. All foreign substances (dirt, paint, oil, grease or rust) must be removed prior to welding. Surface
should be ground clean.
6. Align and clamp reinforcement plates in place firmly before welding. The gap between surfaces
should not exceed 0.5 mm. Remove slag from tack welds.
7. Cross corner tack weld. Avoid long continuous welds to prevent distortion.
8. Always provide a ground as close to the area you are welding. Do not use hydraulic cylinders as
part of the weld ground circuit.
9. When welding close to a pin joint area, install pin into bores to minimize distortion. Tape all
exposed pin areas to prevent damage from sparks.
10. Finish weld and grind as illustrated in modification instructions.

• Paint Information

Paint reinforcement plates and welds with yellow primer followed with a natural yellow finish coat.
Contact dealer/distributor or factory for paint availability.
