Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

New inventions and technological devices have been developed, individuals rely
on them or nearly everything that needs to be done without exerting so much effort to do
the task. Traditional teaching is now mediocre, reducing much attention to the students
and so much paper works to the teachers. Since the vast of technology has been taken
place and one of those is E-Learning.

Despite improvements in educational indicators, significant challenges remain

with regard to the delivery of quality education in developing countries, particularly in
rural and remote regions. In the attempt to find viable solutions to these challenges,
much hope has been placed mobile phones being one example. The popularity of
mobile devices has changed the way we learn, communicate, and live.
Vast of smartphones and android phones have spread in the market and most of
the students owns one of them. Rogers, et.al (2009) provides the concepts and code
that is needed to start building smart phone applications with android programming
environment. Mobile application will also help in learning some subjects according to
Eziline Software House (2016) English spelling can be learned easily using a mobile
application, good grammar and misspelled word can easily improve.

The researchers came up with an idea of developing an educational and friendly

game entitled “Hear Me Spell Me”. This is a spelling quiz that will help students to
enhance their spelling, hearing and pronunciation skills and help them have more
interest in their study.

This study is an android game that will serve as an alternative teaching tool. New
technology especially android games can strongly help in education to develop skills,
knowledge and abilities. That is one of the reason why researchers created an
alternative way of teaching and learning which is playing at the same time learning.

Objectives of the Study

This study aimed to develop Hear Me Spell Me Mobile Application. In particular

this study aimed to create a device that will:

1. spell the current word you hear,

2. generate score
3. give 30 random words in each level and
4. evaluate the application using the IBM Computer System Usability Scale.

Scope and Limitations

Scope are the specifications that will be observed in detailed on the project after
its development phase. While, limitations are the specifications that could be possibly
integrated on the project. However, the researchers are not capable of incorporating it so
it will turn out to be the research limitations.

Scope

1. Can generate score.

2. It has 3 levels which are the easy, moderate, and hard.
3. It has 30 random words in each level but it only shows 10 random words
every time you play the game.
4. Good for all ages.
5. It has a time limit.

Limitation

1. It can only spell single words.

2. For single player only.
3. It displays high score if only the player got the highest score like 7, 8, 9
and 10.
4. The game can’t retry, cancelled and pause. Once you cancelled the game
you need to input another player’s name.
5. Only capable for android phone.

Significance of the Study

The researchers developed a “Hear me Spell me mobile application” that will

enhance the spelling and hearing skills of the pupils, and to encourage the pupils to
have more interest in their studies.

Tabunan Elementary School

It will help their school to be known because of having a competitive learners in

terms of spelling the words even those difficult ones.

Tabunan Elementary School Pupils

The pupils will provide the basic knowledge which is needed by them to enhance
their spelling and hearing skills. This is also to make spelling subject more interesting,
easy, and fun.

Parents

The study will help the parents of the player/pupils to make sure that their
children are still on the state of learning while playing the game. The application will
serve as their children E-learning device that will help them in improving the knowledge
and mind capabilities of the children.

Researchers

The study will benefit not only the desired target but also the researchers
considering that it will help improve their background knowledge in the different
programming languages.

Future Researchers

This study will serve as a guide to future researchers who desire to focus or
conduct the same study. This will also serve as a tool that will provide necessary
information needed by future researchers. This will also help them to develop a better

study thinking that the past researchers of this study can probably made it and
encourage them to do a better and a unique one.
