CLEANING OF AIRCRAFT
There are many kinds of cleaning agents approved for use in cleaning aircraft. It is impractical to cover
each of the various types of cleaning agents since their use varies under different conditions, such as the
type of material to be removed, the aircraft finish, and whether the cleaning is internal or external.
Cleaning: Removal of visible dirt or particles through mechanical action, normally undertaken on a
routine and frequent basis. The cleaning process and some products used for cleaning also result in
disinfection.
Cleaning intervals:
(a) Turnaround cleaning: Performed on aircraft while on ground prior to departure within a defined
ground time.
(b) Transit cleaning: Type of turnaround clean that may be performed with transit passengers onboard
(c) Layover cleaning: Performed when the aircraft is on a longer predefined time. The clean does not
involve removal of cabin panels and/or gallery inserts.
(e) Deep cleaning: Performed when the aircraft is on a longer predefined time. The cleaning may include
the removal of cabin panels and/or galley inserts and including cleaning performed during maintenance.
NOTE: Cleaning done during aircraft maintenance is NOT addressed in the scope of this document.
Event: An occurrence of suspected or confirmed COVID case onboard of aircraft; aircraft contaminated
with body fluids, or other non-standard (uncommon) situation requesting additional cleaning and
disinfection.
This lesson will discuss the ground up operation on reciprocating engine. These procedures are
presented only as a general guide for familiarization with typical procedures and methods. Detailed
instructions for starting a specific type of engine can be found in the manufacturer’s instruction book.
✓ If the aircraft is turbine-engine powered, the area in front of the jet inlet must be kept
clear of personnel, property, and/or debris (FOD). These “before starting” procedures
apply to all aircraft powerplants.
✓ Follow manufacturer’s checklists for start procedures and shutdown procedures.
