a) Collect a gross sample, sufficient to provide about 100 ± 0.5 Kg of Iron ore for each of
the test, so that, the gross sample should dried at oven 105 ± 50C. The sample shall
be allowed to cool to room temperature before performing the tests. The Iron ore
sample shall be pass a 40mm sieve and be retained 10mm sieve, the reduced
sample shall be separated into 3 fractions by screening to 25mm, 16mm & 10mm
sieves. From the material on 3 sieves, the final sample of 15 ± 0.15kg shall be
prepared by tacking proportionate weight of material from each sieve, the weight of
the different fractions shall be recorded.
Test Procedure:
1. The machine should be kept on the leveled surface.
2. Give the power supply of 3-Phase with neutral to the machine (i.e. 4 pole 16 Amp
MCB, 415 Volts, 50/60 Hz, A.C. Power Supply with Earth).
3. Ensure that proper earthing is given. Avoid loose connection should be in the line.
4. Carefully place 15 Kg of the air dried iron ore in the drum, avoiding any breakage
of the ore.
6. Simultaneously Timer/Counter will get switched ON and will show the display.
7. Set the required time in the Timer accordingly (since the Timer is Delay on Timer)
using the thumbwheel switch.

11. Press the START push button, simultaneously the Timer, Motor and Counter will
get ON.
12. Process will start, once the Time and Counter reaches the SET TIME and count.
Automatically it will get switched OFF, it means the process is completed.
13. Arrange a test sieve of square aperture of 40 mm, 25 mm, 16 mm, 10mm, 9 mm,
6.3mm and 500micron apertures with the sieve of the largest aperture on the top.
14. The drum shall be rotated 25 ± 1rpm for a total of 200 revolutions. All the materials
shall be genteelly the removed from the drum by slowly opening door and sieved on
6.3mm and 500 micron sieves and the weight of the fraction retained on 6.3mm
sieve and that retained on passing through 500 micron sieves shall be determined.
Record:
The sieve analysis after the test shall be reported to the nearest 0.1% is the percentage
retained on the 6.3mm sieve and the percent retained on and the percent passing through
500 micron sieve.
Calculation:
The tumbler index (T) and the abrasion index (A) shall be calculated to the first decimal by
rounding off the second decimal in accordance with the following
formula:
T = m1 x100
m
A = m- (m1+m2) x 100
m
Where
m = weight of the sample before test
m2 = weight of the sample passing through 6.3 mm and retained on 500 micron
sieves after the test.
