APPLICATION OF RADIATION HEAT TRANSFER TO AGRICULTURE

The transfer of heat from a body with a high temperature to a body with a lower temperature even when bodies
are not in direct physical contact with each other or when they are separated in space, is called heat radiation.
The energy radiates in the form of photons or electromagnetic waves. The sun is the primal energy producer of
our solar system. A tremendous amount of solar energy is generated due to the continuous nuclear fusion taking
place in its core. The power from the sun intercepted by the earth is approximately 1.8 x 1011 MW. This makes
it one of the most promising unconventional energy sources. Solar energy is available in abundance in most part
of our country throughout the year. Nowadays, climate change became the persistent concern of every sector
worldwide. With continuous rising of global temperature, it is dynamic for each and every sector to concentrate
on the number of greenhouse gases they emit and the amount of fossil fuels they consume. Warmer
temperatures are causing havoc such as drought, floods and early frost that makes life harder or eventually cause
of losing of life of many. With such rising concerns, solar energy is proving to be a boom to manhood.
Widespread use of solar energy as renewable energy for domestic, agricultural and agro-industrial activities has
now been practiced. Cumulative threat of acute shortage of the commercial sources of energy coupled with
serious environmental pollution problems has fast-tracked interest in the scientific exploitation of renewable
sources of energy. Energy available from the sun is inexhaustible and environment friendly. Agriculture is one
such sector, which can benefit hugely due to the adoption of solar energy. With the rising global population, the
demand for agricultural products is increasing at an exponential rate. Farmers are at the center of the problem
regarding global warming because of the continuous rising of temperature which affects the climate change
which in turn affects the agricultural produce. World population is continuously increasing and the demand for
food products is witnessing a significant rise. Using solar power can help us to curb climate change and help us
fight the problem effectively. In the field of agriculture, solar energy has a lot of application such as drying of
agricultural crops, solar water irrigation, and space heating of agricultural buildings. The solar energy
technologies are likely to play an important role in the near future through a variety of thermal applications and
decentralized power generation. These solar photovoltaic and thermal devices will be very beneficial in growing
crop production, processed product and milk production in adding to accompanying conventional energy
sources. These devices will ensure bigger farmers’ income by carrying out integrated activities. Last but not the
least there will be decrease of CO2 emission to a great degree. The scope of solar thermal energy in agricultural
production and processing sectors is tremendous. It can complement conventional energy sources to a great
extent to make the dry zone more self-dependent on energy. The use of renewable energy will not only restrain
the consumption of fast diminishing conventional fuels but also lessen greenhouse gas productions. There is a
great need of promoting the solar thermal energy by disseminating these eco-friendly technologies for the
sustainable development of society. It requires active participation of users/industrialist and researchers. The
availability of clean and green energy source in rural areas would enable farmers to accumulate higher financial
benefits through processing and agro-based industries to improve the livelihood of farmers and enhancing their
standard of living.
