MACHINE LUBRICATION RECOMMENDATIONS

1. GENERAL INFORMATION
1.1. Choosing the oil
Important properties of oil
– stability of the properties over the total using period
– demulsibility of oil
– air–release and anti–foam properties
The properties of the oil change in use; meaning that certain additives are no longer
capable to fulfill the functions intended for them.
There is a risk of damaging the components if:
– wrong oil has been chosen
– the recommended changing interval is exceeded

Check the original oil type from the machine card.

1.2. Viscosity of oil

Too low viscosity causes:

– Breaking of the lubrication film in contacting surfaces. The resulting
metal–to–metal contact between the surfaces causes rapid wear increasing the
need of maintenance.
– Internal leaks in components increase reducing the efficiency.
Too high viscosity causes:
– Flow losses in the system, and thus also deterioration of the efficiency.
– The load on the seals increases, due to higher return line pressure.
– For certain rock drills wear of the rotation shaft and thrust bearing because the
return line pressure is too high.
– Too stiff oil causes a cavitation risk for the pumps.

2. HYDRAULIC SYSTEM
The oil recommendations are based on the operation temperature of the oil. Hydraulic,
motor– or biodegradable hydraulic oils can be used. Tamrock ’s recommendation is to use
hydraulic oils in the hydraulic system.

The selected hydraulic oil should be of high quality, and should also be functional in
varying temperature ranges. Furthermore, it should contain additives typical for high
performance hydraulic oils. Oils suitable for use in hydraulic systems are Eg. :
– Shell Tellus (hydraulic oil),
– Shell Rimula (motor oil)
– Shell Naturelle HFE (biodegr. hydr. oil, synthetic ester)
First of all when choosing the viscosity of the oil to be used, the temperature of the drilling
environment is important. Pay attention for temperature variation.
When choosing the oil observe the following:
1. Check or estimate the operating temperature of the oil.
2. Viscosity of the oil at the operating temperature should be close to the 60 cSt
value, yet so that a possible deviation in continuous use stays within the range
50...110 cSt.
The following variation limits are momentarily (but not continuously!) allowed:
– 110 – 200 cSt as a result of cold temperature peak, or
– 30 – 50 cSt as a result of hot temperature peak

The limits given by the general charts should be observed first and foremost. In
each case it should always be checked that the product in question brings about
the desired properties.

3. If the temperature of the drilling environment does not vary much, it is most
recommendable to use unigrade oil which viscosity alters in practice least as a
result of use.
4. If the drilling conditions are such that an unigrade oil does not keep within the given
viscosity limits, then a multigrade oil should be chosen instead.
5. The oil should be changed once a year if heavy use does not require more frequent
changing. This change recommendation based on time is given for the reason that
in a year the oil ages and collects moisture so much that changing is justified.
For arctic conditions (temperature below –20C) synthetic oils are recommended.

2.3. Biodegradable hydraulic oils

We set the same high technical quality requirements for biodegradable oils that we set for
conventional mineral oils. In addition, they should be environmentally compatible, which
means quality requirements relating to
– biodegradability
– ecotoxicity
– use and disposal
International standard ISO/CD 15380 (2nd draft, available in year 2000) shall specify our
requirements for environmentally acceptable hydraulic fluids.
In addition, following tests and limits relating to environmental compatibility should be
fulfilled:
Biodegradability
– OECD 301 B
 60% after 28 days
Ecotoxicity
– OECD 202 (Daphnia), OECD 203 (Fish), OECD 201 (Algae)
 ASTM D 6081 – 97: EL50/LL50 > 100 mg/l
Use and disposal
appropriate precautions in use and disposal should be used
